The Border War between Missouri and Kansas has been dormant since 2011, but there was an opportunity for the iconic rivalry to resume in the Liberty Bowl this month.

There was just one problem: Missouri didn’t want to play Kansas, so the matchup will not happen, industry sources told Action Network.

The Jayhawks, who are making their first bowl appearance since 2008, were not opposed to playing the Tigers in a bowl, sources said.

Schools provide their bowl preferences and the conferences, bowls and schools usually come to an agreement whenever possible. It’s not unusual for schools to request not playing certain opponents in the postseason, sources said.

The Liberty Bowl is one of three that matches SEC vs. Big 12 opponents. The other two are the Sugar and Texas bowls. Missouri and Kansas are both 6-6.

“A 6-6 team dictating who they don’t want to play in a bowl?” an industry source said. “What a world. What a world.”

Dating back to 1907, the Kansas-Missouri rivalry was the second-longest in FBS when it ended after the 2011 season when the Tigers left the Big 12 for the SEC. In 2020, the schools announced they would resume the series, scheduling four games starting in 2025.

A Kansas-Missouri matchup would have been one of the most highly anticipated of the postseason, but fans of each school now will have to wait until 2025

12 team playoff...and then completely end bowl season...and FINALLY end the last 30 years of the biggest welfare generation of the sport. Bowl games for everyone...talk about making the regular season meaningless...6-6...have a bowl game. 12 teams in all of college football make the post season...period!

The excuse right now is that they didn't want the bowl game to be on the same night as their home basketball game against Kentucky, so that the crowd size wouldn't be affected. Last year their bowl game was on the same day as the Braggin Rights game against Illinois and people weren't pleased.

There is also a feeling that since there isn't really much to play for just go to the earliest bowl on the schedule and get the season over with.

Ultimately though, I think they wanted to save themselves the embarrassment of losing to Kansas in football and basketball in the span of about a week.

No upside. Zero.

Bowl games are all about NEXT year's team and roster. Half of the good players sit out for draft prep or transfer portal or whatever.

Mizzou's roster for their mediocre bowl game will be nothing like their roster that beat Arkansas.

Kansas will have players sitting out too. Scared y’all are gonna get dragged 40-6 like when y’all played K-State ?

The upside is not giving those shitbirds in Lawrence something to hold over you for eternity.

And you're no longer allowed to complain about being shafted by the SEC with the bowl pecking order in the future.

Meh. No one gives a shite about crappy bowl games between 6-6 teams.

They've been ducking a non-conference matchip for years. Mizzou has been wanting to renew it for many years. Mizzou will do a home-home or neutral site in KC.

If Lance nuts up, let's get the rivalry during the season where it is meaningful and where it belongs.

What a bitch move by mizzou.

Auburn backed out of playing FSU in 1999 and we still haven’t heard the end of it.

So, do we get a Kansas v. Ar-Kansas Liberty bowl instead?

What is it about ex-Big XII teams and ducking bowl games to avoid losses? This shite is embarrassing.

In general I'd say this is accurate. But a rivalry match up with real bad blood would have drawn national notoriety, at least to some degree.

It would also get a fanbase that's rapidly moving toward apathy something to get excited about. I guess the earlier the season gets done, the more time Drink has to drive around his dump truck.

Mizzou doesn't deserve to play in a bowl game. They need to move on from this year's poor season.

The only thing they care about is getting freshman practice reps.

According to Mizzou fans on the Rant it's because their AD has connections in Las Vegas and is trying to get that bowl instead. Would be funny if they got left out though.

Doesn't matter, it's still a bad look. Imagine if we would've declined to play UCF last year and that was a lose/lose game.

Wroong. Wrong. Wrong.

Bowl practices are about getting ready for next season. It gives those guys valuable reps and playing time.
