You can ask for help in either situation. Check swings and bunts are some of the most difficult calls for a plate umpire to make and any good plate ump will ask for help unless it's blatantly obvious that the hitter offered at the pitch.

And I don't call ball for the $$$$. Yeah it's a nice benefit but I do it b/c I love the game and it keeps me in shape. The $$ is at best, tertiary. Those who do it solely for the $$$ are in it for the wrong reasons.

That is crazy, in Mississippi you get paid the same no matter how big or small the school is. The pay is the same and it goes up for the playoffs

When you run a 2-man system in HS baseball, the base umpire is moving on every ball in play, especially coming in from A position(behind first base) w/the bases empty.

I left in the middle of a game from behind the plate but I was vomiting through my mask! I caught a fastball that skipped off of the plate and cracked my cup. Catcher tried to “ole” the ball and never touched it. a-hole must have protested my calls. Worst sound I have ever heard in my life. There was puke in my mask and blood in my urine for a few days. Do not recommend that. Haven’t been behind the plate since.
