BIG TEN CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES POSTPONEMENT OF 2020-21 FALL SPORTS
“We create opportunities for student-athletes to succeed academically, athletically, and in their life’s pursuit, through collaboration that values all within our community understanding that none of this is possible without ensuring the health, safety, and wellness of all.” - MSU Athletics Mission Statement
Earlier today, the Big Ten Conference, in consultation with medical officials, announced the postponement of fall sports, including football, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. READ MORE HERE This decision was made out of concern for the health and safety of our student-athletes and all who work with them.
REACTION
All of us share in the disappointment that our student-athletes and coaches cannot compete this fall. For MSU students, alumni, donors and fans, we’re losing a sense of connection that all Spartans share when we witness our student-athletes excel and claim ‘Victory for MSU’.
BEYOND COMPETITION
For our student-athletes, the loss of competition goes beyond the wins and losses; it’s missing out on growth opportunities as an individual – mentally and physically through the hours of practice and competition; and it’s missing out on being part of a team, the camaraderie and striving for shared goals. Yet competition is only part of our mission and of the overall student-athlete experience. While we may be without competition, we will remain focused on our student-athletes’ academics and their life goals. I invite you to join with us in supporting MSU Athletics during this crucial time.
FINANCIALS
The 2020-21 athletic season will present the toughest financial challenge our athletic department has ever faced. Without football, we project a revenue reduction that will exceed $80 million, representing a decrease of 57%. At this time, all varsity sports and departments have been asked to reduce their budgets by at least 25%, with more reductions likely to come.
YOUR SUPPORT
MAKE A GIFT: Your current and ongoing financial investment will help ensure that our student-athletes and sports are best positioned for success during and after this pandemic. Philanthropic support through Spartan Fund must play a more prominent role than ever for MSU Athletics to remain a successful, self-sustaining program. To lend your support financially, and to send a message to our student-athletes that Spartans Will come together for their Michigan State experience, please make a gift at spartanfund.net or reach out to a Spartan Fund representative at 517-432-4610.

I would pour a bourbon and write them an explanation of what they can do with their donation request.

Don’t give them a dime. Let them choke on the dick they’ve swallowed.

Nice try
How much of an expense reduction are you going to have?
It's amazing to me that college educated people continually tout revenue without mentioning profit or in this case expenses.

I’d maybe feel bad if they had voted to play, but since they didn’t I wouldn’t send them a dime.

They have billions in an endowment. They will be fine.
Might be time for coaches and AD's to take pay cuts for the "good of the program".

USA Today Athletic Dept Revenue/Expenses
From that link, Michigan State brings in $140M, and spends $135.6M, for a profit of $4.4M.
So assuming the $80M (57%) revenue loss, and they are stating that sports are taking a 25% budget cut, that puts them well into the red. If you assume the 25% budget cut to all sports, the expenses will now have expenses of $116.5M.
All in all, the shortfall is:
Revenue $60M
Expenses: $116.5M
Profit(Loss) ($56.5M)

What is it with liberals destroying what they have then asking everyone else to pay to fix it?

Every conference that cancels all donations should cease to schools and season tickets holders should cancel their tickets...

They can hold one in their mouth until the swelling goes down. They're making a decision that can heavily impact their entire future and they want to ask the people that they declined a product for to help foot the bill? The fricking nerve
