I believe per the rule, you have to actually catch the ball or the first bounce has to be in the end zone.
The returner called for the fair catch, then let the ball bounce inside the field of play (not in the end zone).
Ball is dead at that spot.

If it wasn't dead the kicking team could recover it.
That's why they have to catch it to get the ball at the 25.

Yea it has kind of been an issue all year. Way more drops than anyone wants to talk about. They have made some incredible plays all year but all the guys have had drops that have cost the team first downs
