Miami is positioning itself to join another conference or go independent

quote:

In a dark, slimly fitted suit, peering through black spectacles and moving with the suave befitting of the U itself, Echevarria (pronounced ehchuh-vah-reeuh) makes no apologies for his present position: The University of Miami refuses to accept the current status quo as a member of the second class in the growing caste system within college athletics.

And if anyone questions him, Echevarria has a simple retort: It's just business.

"We are proud members of the ACC. If the economics were even, we wouldn't be having any of these conversations," he told Yahoo Sports in an interview this week. "Thing is, we sit in the second tier. It's a reason we don't get a vote on the 24-team playoff and the Big Ten and SEC do."

quote:

This, he says, is why Miami is now positioning itself for a move into college athletics's top financial and social stratosphere, the SEC and Big Ten; why the school (and several others in the ACC) has been forced to explore aspects of football independence; and why the university, despite rebuke from congressional lawmakers and those connected to the White House, is fighting against a federal bill that stands to prevent further realignment in the industry.

"You cannot lock us into a conference," he says, flatly.

"The fact is that we won about every game you could win last year and maxed out in revenue in our current [ACC] sharing model. And we made the same amount of money as other institutions [in the Big Ten and SEC] whose football programs operate at different levels of investment and performance."

If projections are accurate, Echevarria says, the Big Ten and SEC, already distributing an average of $25 million more to each of their schools than the ACC, will almost double their edge when they renegotiate their television contracts in 2030 — the year that the SEC may execute a look-in clause with ESPN and when the Big Ten's current media rights deal expires.

Gonna need a 6 game series with ND every season. Also promising young basketball coach Jai Lucas gonna be shopping for a school with a conference.

Miami doesn't have the fanbase to pull this off. As soon as they start sucking again, their bandwagon fans disappear and no big network is going to give them top dollar. Then NIL dries up and they're in a world of hurt.

You don't just join a conference to have other teams to play. It's so you're guaranteed a consistent payday, even in your lean years.

Miami's been more lean than good in the last 25 years.

Maybe. But netflix and amazon keep throwing around stupid money for sports content.

They may be able to get a 10 year contract for something close to what SEC and B1G schools are getting.

This is what happens when you let Miami have one good year in a quarter century

Lets not let that happen again

Miami, Florida State, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Temple, Penn State, and Pitt should all go independent like the good old days.

I don’t even understand who they would play when you consider they would likely be blacklisted by the ACC schools. SEC and B1G seem increasingly averse to scheduling real OOC games (except for maybe with each other?)

SEC would be smart to scoop them up before the B1G does. They're the real power in the state of Florida not uf or fsu

Can we just add Miami, FSU, Clemson, and Virginia Tech to the SEC and then split into 2 divisions. One division with the 10 pre-1992 members and one division with everyone else added since then. 9 game round robin schedule within your own division and then an SECCG between the division winners.

If Miami goes independent they have a private agreement in principle in place with a conference and you’ll be able to tell who they have a deal with by who they’re playing as an independent.

Miami doesn’t pull numbers like that. Notre Dame-BYU had more than double the viewers of Miami-FSU.

BYU vs Notre Dame was a top 10 match though. Fsu is unranked so you expect the discrepancy

Can we just skip ahead to the super conference phase where college football becomes minor league NFL? It's obvious that we are heading down that path, why drag it out another 5 years?

But it won't be any of the conferences he mentioned. Miami vs members of the Big 12 or Pac 12 isn't gonna do numbers.

I’m not arguing with you. Miami will be fine and in the Big 10 I believe soon enough.

Yep but if they are wanting to jump ship they have to do it before the PCSA passes.

This is not 1992. Fanbase doesn't matter when you're a national TV draw which Miami is.
