ROUND ROCK, Texas – The first round of the 2023 MCLA National Championships presented by New Balance is in the books and we already have an upset.

No. 13 Air Force (11-1) broke a 14-14 tie in the closing moments of the game with a pair of goals to pull off a stunner over No. 4 Montana (17-3), 16-14. The game was tight the entirety of the game with the two squads locked at fours after one and then the Falcons holding a narrow, 9-8 margin at halftime.

The Grizzlies roared back in the third quarter for a 13-12 edge with just a quarter to play, setting up Air Force’s late-game heroics. Jacob Freeman got the game-winning goal for the Falcons with Benjamin Morfit providing the insurance tally.

Morfit and Mark Tang were each credited with four goals and an assist in the win. Miles Hess had four goals and a dime in the losing effort for Montana.

No. 1 Rhode Island (15-1) d. No. 16 North Dakota State (5-7), 20-8
Keegan Reilly scored nine goals – the third most in Division II history – while Kennedy Heath chipped in with a hat trick as top-seeded Rhode Island breezed into the quarterfinals with a 20-8 triumph over No. 16 North Dakota State.

The game was relatively close at the beginning with the Rams holding just a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes, but the lead ballooned to 9-2 at the break. An eight-goal third put the contest away.

Hunter Billings had 10 saves for Rhode Island while a pair of goalies combed for 13 stops for North Dakota State. Cooper Eidem led the Bison with two goals.

No. 2 Cal State San Marcos (15-1) d. No. 15 Minn.-Duluth (5-8), 11-6
Brandon Donatelli netted a hat trick and Kobe Jones added a pair of goals leading second-seeded Cal State San Marcos to an 11-6 victory over No. 15 Minn.-Duluth.

Goals were at a premium all afternoon and the Cougars always came up with a big one to stave off any attempts by the Bulldogs.

Easton Bates had 10 saves for San Marcos while Kyle Ehrlichman posted 11 stops for Duluth.

No. 3 St. Thomas (12-2) d. No. 14 Florida Atlantic (5-7), 13-8
Third-seeded St. Thomas fell behind 3-1 to start the game against No. 14 Florida Atlantic, but Tommies outscored the Owls, 8-2, over the next two quarter to pull away for the five-point win.

Garret Hoch had four goals in the winning effort while Cabe Maskevich chipped in with a pair of goal and three assists. Gunner Arens finished with 14 saves.

Seven different scorers accounted for Florida Atlantic’s eight goals, led by a pair from Patrick Cerasuolo. Nicholas Meola had 14 saves for the Owls.

Looking at all of these Top 16 colleges represented at the National Tournament = it is VERY evident that lacrosse has grown tremendously in this country.

Seeing Michigan win the Big 10 Conference & Utah win their conference over the weekend after being club teams 10 & 5 years ago, respectively = that's MASSIVE. Will be interesting to see who starts getting bumped up to NCAA D1.

I will be extremely happy when the SEC finally goes all in on men's & women's lacrosse.
The money is there. The media/TV content is there. The facilities are already at every campus & will take minimal modifications.
SEC athlete graduation rates would only increase.
The SEC would dominate the landscape inside of 10 years.

Ain’t happening. Title 9 prevents it.

It's crazy that Wake and BC don't have men's NCAA programs.

Won't matter much longer once the Power 5s cut away from the NCAA. They will soon have all the power & money.

They’ll still be governed by Title 9. That’s federal law.

Or how about Columbia? They host the Ivy League mlax conference tournament yet they don't field a NCAA D1 team.

It’s not NCAA D1. It’s a club team.

Ah, gotcha! It's still weird to see them playing in a championship tournament with schools on a D1 level.

Vandy has a wlax D1 team as well.

Florida & Vandy play in the AAC conference.

The Florida women's program is a testament to adding lacrosse to an SEC school. They have been successful since their promotion to D1. They are once again hosting a 1st round tournament game.

That's what's helpful. Title IX requires equality across the sexes. The NCAA sets the scholarship #s & requires the women's numbers get matched. Under Title IX it's balance by sport, not # of scholarships balancing.

Once the NCAA is out of the picture- football is no longer the hill to have to catch up to for balance. The balance is financial support between the matching sports. Football has no equivalent.

What national championship tournament is this because none of the top lacrosse programs in the country are in the tournament.

Ah, I see. This is club teams.

I don’t think this is true. You will still have to have the same number of men’s and women’s athletic scholarships.

The language is that you have to have equal support across paired sports. Football doesn't have a pair/equivalent. The fine print helps, without the NCAA forcing the issue.

This is why the conferences are making moves to the Super Conferences. Once they have the power, money, & most importantly- the influence = they'll write their own rules off of the actual rules of Title IX.

ROUND ROCK, Texas – It was a weird, wild and emotional Division I late show at the 2023 MCLA National Championships presented by New Balance at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex on Monday night.

The only upset of the evening was No. 12 Brigham Young (14-6) using a dominant effort on both sides of the field in the second half to upset No. 5 Florida (12-3), 10-6.

The Gators took a 3-1 lead early in the contest, but the Cougars tied it after one at three apiece. The contest was still tied at fives heading into the second half. It was from there that BYU dominated.

Florida managed just one goal the entire second half while the Cougar offense, led by a huge performance from Jake Halversen, who scored three goals – including the eventual game-winner – while handing out a pair of assists.

Dylan Weinberg notched a hat trick for Florida while James Dugan added a pair of goals.

Brigham Young will faceoff with Chapman tomorrow evening at 8 p.m.

No. 8 Utah Valley (16-2) d. No. 9 Boston College (10-3), 12-6
It one of the weirdest game arcs of Day One, Utah Valley went from destitute to destroyers against Boston College.

Trailing 6-0 to the Eagles early in the second quarter, the Wolverines called timeout to get back on track. It worked. Boston College never scored again and Utah Valley tallied the next 12 goals to finish the game.

Blake Yates had four goals to lead the comeback while Max Sturgill posted 16 saves. Henry Miller had a pair of goals for BC and Brian Kaskey turned away 17 shots.

Utah Valley will meet No. 1 Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals at 5:15 p.m.

No. 6 Georgia (13-2) d. No. 11 Simon Fraser (11-1), 11-7
The favored Bulldogs appeared to be in some serious trouble against the undefeated Red Leafs, trailing 7-4 heading into the final stanza. But it was then that Georgia woke up.

The Dawgs went on 7-0 run in the fourth to flip the result into an 11-4 victory.

Sam Wheeler notched a hat trick and an assist in UGA’s game-changing fourth-quarter run to victory while Reed McCall made 10 saves.

Jordan Roberts led Fraser with three goals. Brock Jung made 15 saves.

Georgia advances to play No. 3 Liberty in the quarters.

No. 7 Concordia (12-5) d. No. 10 Northeastern (11-6), 12-11
In a game halted for nearly an hour due to a serious injury, Concordia emerged with the 12-11 victory thanks to a last-minute goal from Andrew Buckley.

In an evenly matched contest from the start, neither team could pull away from the other. The Eagles held a 5-4 lead after the fourth and Concordia clung to a 7-5 lead at halftime.

Trailing 8-7 heading into the fourth, Northeastern finally knotted the game at 11 with just under two minutes left to play and grabbed possession. After a lengthy hiatus, Concordia ran a precision break off a turnover to deliver a pretty transition goal by Buckley.

Jeremy Barnes notched a hat trick for the Eagles while Tyler Collins and Chad McFadden had two goals apiece. Daniel Yang finished with seven saves.

Luke Lange had a hat trick for the Huskies while Ryan McCarthy and Christopher Wilkin potted two each. Sam Bellomy was credited with five saves.

Concordia draws No. 2 Georgia Tech in the quarterfinals.
