Doncic was eligible to sign a five-year, $345 million supermax contract extension with the Mavericks this offseason, which would have been the largest contract in NBA history.

The largest extension Doncic can ink this summer in LA is a five-year, $229 million contract, which The Athletic's John Hollinger broke down

Did Luka bang Nico’s wife? I get a max deal is still incredible money, but $119m value lost? Sheesh.

The Mavs absolutely hated Luka. What a remarkable moment in sports history

How was this kept under wraps? This feels borderline personal.

Probably because it was purely personal

Luka literally posted a snapshot of his call log last night where he ignored 10+ calls from Nico Harrison and accepted one call from Lebron

They didn't want to pay

Makes sense in that regard

It's even funnier if Luka leaves LA too

I am starting to see where I might balk at signing a chubby, injury prone guy that doesn’t play any defense to $350 million. That said, not getting a better return is malpractice.

Shades of this

*ETA: if my memory is correct, he was negotiating an extension and this lowered the max they could offer him.

From info at some Mavericks forums, bottom line they were not going to give this guy a SuperMax contract because they felt what he'd require had the potential to cripple the franchise financially and because even though he's "a 25-year-old generational Alpha" (that's what all the fans on their boards who hate this deal are saying), with his conditioning and injury issues they're concerned about how long he's going to be at that "generational Alpha" level. They figured he's gone anyway down the road, so get what they can get for him while the getting's good.

But they didnt get what they could for him. They didnt even shop him.

Thats the dumbest part. Even dumber than trading him, was how they traded him.

There are reports now, take them as you will, that they talked to one other team but couldn’t get together on anything.

And my last post was incorrect, Mavs GM just said at press conference he only talked to Lakers.

It looks like they were talking to Milwaukee about Giannis.

Nico Harrison didn’t even shop Luka around to get the best deal possible. That’s organizational malpractice.
