It’s was also down from, I believe, the highest rated masters ever.

While also true, it still was the lowest rated Saturday and Sunday since 1957. But there were 100% unusual and atypical circumstances that led to the drop (very early start times, competing with CFB and NFL, runaway champ, Tiger being out of contention before TV coverage even started Saturday, etc). The PGA Championship actually had better ratings this year compared to last year with a 3% increase in viewership. The US Open, like the Masters, had a precipitous 55% drop because it, like the Masters, was going up against an NFL Sunday as it had never done before.

I'm really not sure what the point of this thread is supposed to be. That golf is less popular than the NFL? I don't think anyone will argue that. However, almost every PGA Tour event that took place before the NFL season was actually drawing better ratings than the same events last year, so I think golf is doing just fine, despite less than desirable viewership for one tournament. Hell, "The Match" with Tiger/Phil/Brady/Manning drew better ratings than the final round at the Masters with an average of 5.8 million viewers

From what I remember the NBA ratings were terrible even when not up against the NFL while golf ratings were pretty strong in the summer before football started

summer is when golf is typically played the NBA restarted well after their season typically ends. Also Tiger Woods won the 2019 Masters, it has been well documented that when Tiger is in the hunt on Sunday in a major the ratings are thru the roof.

I did not understand why it ended so early. Last year I vividly recall watching Tiger finish around 4pm Central. This time, I got home from my drive back from Houston at 3pm and it had been over for almost an hour.

Daylight in November. Last year also ended earlier than normal fwiw, as they started early and in 3-somes due to impending bad weather that, oddly enough, never came iirc. The final group usually tees off around 2:30 PM (ET). Last year, Tiger/Molinari/Finau teed off at 9:20 AM. This year, DJ/IM/Ancer teed off at 9:29, but they also had guys starting on the front and back 9, something that has never happened at the Masters before on the weekend. Sunrise is around 7:00 AM and sunset 5:30 PM in November, so they had a tight window to get the rounds played.

But your memory is a little off for last year. Tiger finished around 2:30 PM (ET).

That's technically incorrect. They tee'd off the final round in 2019 earlier because of incoming weather. Tiger won the jacket around 2:30 pm ET last year.

They had to end it early this year because it gets dark around 5pm in November.

That had to end it early so that CBS could honor their NFL contract and televise a game at 04:00 eastern. They played past 5:30 local time on Thursday and Friday.

funny how that's the case for golf but wasn't for the NBA

I thought the nba's ratings were down all season long even when not going up against the nfl.

They had to do that because of the delay on Thursday.

Fox's early afternoon window, unopposed by NFL on CBS but up against The Masters, did big numbers

Probably because it was a pitch and putt. No one wants to see that.

I changed the channel when I saw "Black Lives Matter" mowed onto the fairway on the first hole.

The April weekend is definitely less competition for viewership especially on a Sunday
Good thing is next Masters will be here soon hopefully with fans

Lulz, thinking Green Jackets would have that on the grounds.

Absolutely nothing. I just felt like getting attention. Carry on.

In all seriousness, how did anyone not expect this? Golf is a boring enough sport to watch on television already. Add in the fact that the final round aired on a Sunday, in the middle of football season, and of course ratings are going to suffer. The only reason why people tune into the Masters when it's on in its normal time slot is because there is quite literally nothing else being televised.

Hopefully it costs PGA players lots of money.

Here is the PGA supporting a rapist and woman abuser written on a scumbags shoes.
