It is actually. When a coach leaves before his contract is up the acquiring school typically has to buy out the remainder of that contract in order for the coach to leave.
When a player leaves they go with no penalties and are allowed to start playing immediately.

Marshall was 10-3. They didn’t extend their coach who just won the sunbelt champ ship game. He’s had a great run at Marshall. I think 37-25 record. The coach left Marshall for Southern Miss after the university wouldn't give him a new contract. I don’t blame the players for entering the portal.
