Cristobal is entering the fifth year of a 10-year deal that ran through 2031 and paid him a reported $8 million annually. Miami has not announced a new deal for Cristobal, who took his alma mater to the national title game last season.

Well deserved extension. He’s a top 3 coach in the league along with Cignetti and Day.

quote:

Cristobal has revitalized the Hurricanes program since his arrival in 2022, increasing the win total each season. After Miami went 10-3 in 2024 behind future No. 1 pick Cam Ward, the Hurricanes went 13-3 last season -- making it to the CFP national title game before falling short against Indiana in Miami Gardens, Florida.

In four seasons with the Hurricanes, Cristobal is 35-19. Heading into 2026, Miami is hoping to build off last season with transfer portal addition Darian Mensah at quarterback and returning stars Mark Fletcher Jr. and Malachi Toney.

CAW has a weird self-hating Cristobal/U fetish. I was like this for a while when OSU was stomping our arse and still have it in my system somewhat.

If he’s top 3, then Pete Golding is top 6.

He's definitely top 5. Here's where I would rank the coaches currently:

Tier 1 / Top 5
1. Curt Cignetti
2. Ryan Day
3. Kirby Smart
4. Dan Lanning
5. Mario Cristobal

Tier 2 / Top 10
6. Lane Kiffin
7. Steve Sarkisian
8. Marcus Freeman
9. Dabo Swinney
10. Kalem DeBoer

Outside of Lane Kiffin, there's no other coach not in the top 5 that I would trade for Mario Cristobal if I'm Miami. Even in 6 - 10, Steve Sarkisian and Dabo Swinney have proven nothing in the current 12 team CFP system.

I’d put Cristobal ahead of Lanning

He built the foundation for Lanning at Oregon and then he built Miami up and has surpassed anything Lanning has done at Oregon.

Lanning coaches in a real conference. Cristobal is an ace recruiter but Miami is benefitting from a down acc, a down fsu, and a down UF.

If you put Cristobal at uga, you think he outperforms Kirby?

Lanning ironically inherited a good Oregon program already on the way up, thanks ironically to Cristobal. Cristobal inherited an Oregon program that had been decimated under Helfrich.

It didn't take that much for Lanning to get Oregon up to the next level, competing for NC's again. Cristobal was on the way to getting Oregon to that next level anyway.

While I would take Lanning over Cristobal, the reality is when Lanning has lost it's been in spectacular dominating fashion. That's a little concerning as it shows he hasn't learned to adjust in-game yet. Cristobal got Miami to the NC game and within what, 30 - 40 yards, of an NC. Lanning was humiliated by Ohio State in 2024 and was also humiliated by the same Indiana team in 2025 that Cristobal and Miami came very close to beating.

While I would take Lanning over Cristobal, I don't think the difference is as big as you think it is. They are very close to the same level. I mostly put Lanning over Cristobal as I think Lanning's ceiling is higher and at Oregon he has Big Ten money and resources.

He’ll mismanage the clock and not sign it in time

I think my comments would indicate that I think the gap between those two is primarily driven by the conference they play in, not ability.

This is hilarious considering that there were a lot of Ohio State fans who wanted him fired after the 2024 regular season because he'd just lost to Michigan for the 4th time in a row.

Always blows my mind when schools give these extensions with 5+ years left on original deals.

It’s how a lot of schools end up in terrible buyout situations like A&M and Jimbo.
