Court said she has become a persona non grata in the tennis world because of her Christian beliefs, which led her to oppose same-sex marriage when it was proposed in Australia.

"A lot of the press and television today, particularly in tennis, don't want to mention my name," she said. "The honor has not been there for what I did do. In my own nation, I have been given titles, but they would still rather not mention me."

I think a lot of it comes from this. McEnroe and Navratilova have shite on her quite a bit over this and held up a banner or something couple years ago suggesting the Aussie Open rename the stadium or whatever it is that's named after Court.

Think she's defending her accomplishments more than she's trying to downplay Serena's. Also old people dgaf

lot of y’all have no clue about Margaret court. She was 5’9” herself and unbelievably athletic. She dominated at the net for a woman and overpowered everyone. With modern weights and training she would have been great in this era as well

She won like 13 of her majors against tomato cans

And that doesn’t mean she still wasn’t great

Bama best a tomato can this weekend. Doesn’t mean they aren’t a great team. Court would absolutely be just fine in todays game. She was physically imposing for a woman.

She doesn't have the most slams

She doesn't have the most weeks at number one

She doesn't have the most titles

In what universe is she the greatest womens player ever.

Margaret Court clearly had talent relative to her peers at the time, but older folks need to understand that athletes today are way better and it's way more competitive. Margaret Court claiming she'd love to play today because it's way easier is just wrong.
yeah she wasn’t wrong on the rest but that was the biggest slight because it’s total BS.

I'm not a big tennis guy, so not disputing this. However, you can say this about a lot of sports. Talent pools are deeper, leagues have more teams, it is harder to be the Celtics or UCLA basketball or the Yankees of Ruth/Gehrig. But what they did against their peers at the time still counts. We don't discount 714 homers just because it happened a long time ago. He did it against his peers.

Might as well rip up the record books once a generation if we're going to discount everything that happened in the past just because things have changed.

Apparently per new reality she should be in recognition for greatest player ever, men or women.

Don't understand why people can't just appreciate her accomplishments as a "cis female" LOL or as most of the world calls a woman.

She didn’t play her entire career in the open era is what I mean. Often she was beating amateurs

The open era began in 68

She then won 11 of the 20 grand slams in the next 5 years, and she missed 7 of those grand slams due to having a baby

So she won 11 of the 13 grand slams she played in during the time she played in the Open era…..

So she won a bunch of her majors against in a less competitive era. I’m sure she was great but on paper there’s just no comparison

Serena great player, awful person. The way announcers and the media suck up to her 24/7 and make her out as some kind of tennis god with mother Teresa personality is nauseating.

I'm trying to understand how I've legit never heard of that person before this story. I can't really figure that out.

I'm a sports guy blah blah blah. Played tennis in high school and it was one of my favorite sports to watch in my teens and 20s, though it was mostly the guys.

I just don't get how I could not have heard the name of an all time great with that many wins.

One can argue back & forth about which of the two was better, but a lot of Court's point is that she is totally ignored because of her Faith & opinions re gays. And that is not arguable. She has been completely ignored by the female tennis elite. And that is a valid bitch.

If you aren't going to use slams then there isn't any arguement.

Steffi Graf far surpasses Serena in every metric and retired 10 years younger.

One slam less. More weeks at number 1. More career titles. Better win %. All open era.

DAMN! BOOM!

That's a serious mike drop!

Graf also was am absolute gem on the court and seemed very humble off the court. (Just a guess no real world interaction.)

she kinda lays it out. nobody cares and the tennis community doesn't really bring her in or embrace her.

People hold Arthur Ashe, BJK, Serena, and Martina Navratilova with more reverence than they do Graff, Cout, or Samparas because of them breaking stereotypes. I'm not saying they pretend they don't exist or minimize them, but there's a different level of piety.

imagine having the most major wins ever while taking time off for two kids.. then 50 years later, somebody gets thisclose to breaking your record and never wins again after having a kid and then everybody says that she's better than you for all time.

ETA: somebody went to her for a quote after Serena's retirement and put that out as a headline. personally, i wouldn't comment on it, but it'd rub me the wrong way as well if i were Court.
