Fickell basically wouldn't talk to anyone while he was still in the playoffs, so Notre Dame panicked and tried to keep their top 5 recruiting class together by elevating the best recruiter on the staff to Head Coach who all the players loved.
ND could have probably had Fickell had they waited til January, but early signing day fricked them. If they had not hired a coach ASAP, they would have probably lost a good chunk of their class.
It was a catch 22 for ND, but it looks like they just hired John L Smith after Bobby Petrino....
