Because he dropped to the second round

Much better players than teo have dropped to the second round without lying about their fake girlfriend dying. How do you explain that?

This story got him attention, exposure, and awards that he didn’t deserve and otherwise would not have gotten. It was was undoubtedly a net positive for him.

He was a huge name college guy being mocked higher than teams really liked him. 2 down ILBs weren't first round picks even back then.

If Manti Te'o wasn't a Notre Damer, which made him the beneficiary of the media absolutely gushing over him in 2012, we'd think he was a damn good LB and nothing else.

I will say the doc was really good though. Roniah is a friggin' nutjob.

Just wrapped it up. Sympathetic to Te’O here but how can you be that gullible, even in 2012? Good on him for being able to not kill or severely injure the tranny.

I'm right there with you. I was sympathetic to Te'o until it was clear he wanted to be an inspiration and was putting his head in the sand about meeting this "girl" IRL.

The catfisher was a Grade-A piece of shite

Over here talking about how it made her feel, and how trapped she felt, but they're emotionally manipulating another guy just because their daddy made them play football against their will.

The move to become trans screams, "frick, gotta use this get out of jail free card while I can"

I always thought this was a ploy by notre dame to get headlines and eventually a heisman

It worked. Now the folks who handed out those trophies for something that had nothing to do with his abilities should have had a lot of explaining to do. No one can justify those awards all going to a very pedestrian LBer on a good team.

BAMA used and abused Te'o all night. Eddie Lacy ran over, around, and through Te'o. He couldn't wrap up and bring down runners when he was there. And the final insult that night, besides the score, BAMA had the best LBer on the field that night, and by a long shot, in CJ Mosley.

If you ever wonder how much politics play in the giving out of awards, it was fully exposed that season. And shame on the lack of integrity of these awards shows.

Crazy how selfish the dude who catfished him was. Never expressed any concern about how it effected Te'o

This. You made the guy a laughing stock, you piece of shite. Show a little remorse.

but if you put yourself in his shoes, situationally and culturally, you can see how this may happen in 2009-2012, while catfishing wasn’t nearly as prevalent.

I was in college around that timeframe too, and sorry but I would have never fallen for that shite. And catfishing was definitely a thing at the time, that initially movie came out in 2010 before MTV turned it into a show and people had been phishing people myspace and facebook profiles and sending scam emails to steal people's money for a good bit. Online scams were a thing any internet user should have been aware of, that's why I never got the whole online, long distance dating thing to begin with. Hell a running joke ever since even just AIM chats were a thing was that "girl" on the internet stood for "guy in real life", people should always be skeptical unless they have met in real life or at the very least done video calls or something.

I don't think he's a bad guy or anything and I liked having him on the Saints, but he's still dumb for that. Also him and his family straight up lied because they said they had actually met this nonexistent girl before it came out that obviously never happened. At the very least he embellished the nature of the relationship with this girl he thought had died and got sympathy the entire season for it, it's hard for me to feel too sorry for him when he had to walk that back. If he'd have just been honest that it was just an online relationship from the start and had never met her then he wouldn't have had as much egg on his face when the truth came out.

I really hope he didn't sign off on this documentary because the smart thing to do would have been to let it continue to be as forgotten as possible, not remind the public all about it a decade later.

FIFY. If a man cuts off his dick and wears a dress, he's not a woman. He's a man with no dick who is wearing a dress.

I wouldn’t have fallen for it either, but I also wasn’t a Polynesian star football player at Notre Dame.

I think Manti probably looked at dating and relationships differently than 99% of us did. And I really don’t think the guy was watching MTV. He was very focused on football, his faith, and making it to the NFL to help support his family.

Also, his roommate was in a similar situation having a gf that he only saw twice a year. And it sounds like Manti had his doubts at times and did want to meet, but the catfisher was a master manipulator.

I can’t really blame that on 20 ish year old Manti. This isn’t really an exercise of looking at it from our own perspective, based on our own lives and what we might have known at the time. Our lives were different and not really comparable to Manti’s even if we went to college during the same time period.

Personally, I find it hard to hate on Manti for any of this. Yes, it’s embarrassing. But, he’s managed an unprecedented situation the best he could on the back end. He still had a pretty good nfl career. He still got married and had a child. And he’s still probably a role model for many in his community.

I don't really fault him for the act of getting catfished itself. I wouldn't have fallen for it and think people need to be in general not be so quick to believe anything they read or hear online but like you said not everyone is as internet savvy as they should be. It's the lying about the situation part is what I take exception with like saying they met after a football game or that she would visit him in Hawaii, or even continuing to publicly say she was dead even after finding out it was all a hoax.

At the end of the day like I said I don't think he's a bad guy or anything and I'm not "hating" on him, I just think he was taught a lesson for his lying and continuing to try to cover it up - in that it was even more embarrassing when it was eventually uncovered than it would have been if he had just been honest from the start. It wouldn't have been such a big story if he hadn't built it up so much in the first place, so that's kinda on him which is why I don't feel too sorry about the way it turned out (the public finding out and reacting, not the act of getting fooled itself).

Glad he got past it and like I said, loved him on the Saints and I'm glad he started a family of his own
