Beamer said himself once that he thought he would get fired early on. It took him several years to make the Hokies respectable because they were so bad.
That said, just because it has been a poor program historically, they shouldn't have fallen off a cliff like this. Beamer made it a good job, but it's like Fuente took a blowtorch to all their recruiting pipelines.

Shane Beamer going home is a lock
Shane was born in Charleston, and often spoke about how special SC was to him while, and after, he was Spurrier's RC.
He *could* go to VaTech, sure. But I'd be very, very surprised.

It amazes me both Virginia schools suck
Populated state in the southeast and plenty talent to recruit

They also had that defensive coordinator foster who was pretty great and was there for a really long time. Can’t easily replace something like that

Not only that, BOTH coordinators have no experience as OC or DC either. What a bunch of idiots to hire a completely green staff.
The reasoning was weird too. They wanted someone who had “ties to Blacksburg”. I mean, I can understand that, but it shouldn’t be the non-negotiable factor

Well Fuente ruined them
Program went downhill the last 4 years under Beamer. Fuente had 2 decent years to start and then regressed to a similar level as the end under Beamer. Then they made a terrible hire.
Fuentes tenure overlapping with Bronco Mendenhall at UVA did not help.

From the stuff I've read before about what went down with Fuentes, it's like a cult formed around Beamer and they can't figure out what to do afterwards.

Why does Va Tech continue to schedule road games at nearby smaller schools?
Two for one deals. They don’t have to pay schools as much to come play them that way.

People forget how bad Tech was besides Beamer.

Their current series with ODU is scheduled thru '31. 4 will be at Tech and 4 at ODU. Marshall was a straight home and home.

Recruiting. Beamer built his empire by establishing pipelines into the fertile, but overlooked, coastal regions of Virginia and Carolina. When he aged out, that dried up. They need those athletes so playing there gives them more exposure.

Doubt they relied much on the recruiting grounds around Huntington, WV though. You also do yourself no favors when you lose in front of the recruits.
