So what the hell happened? I haven't kept up with the rumors but it sounds like nobody is speaking with authority on why he didn't play right? So strange.

This dude was suspended for being a selfish thug. Plain and simple.

"He was sick"

My arse. He was selfish and was disciplined for it. If he weren't such a jackass, he would have played.

I'm not buying all this shite of people feeling bad for him. Give me a break. If he wasn't being an arse, he wouldn't have gotten disciplined by his boss. This sympathy has got to stop.

I saw a report that he showed up late to Team Facilities.........THEN........got busted for marijuana............THEN...........went off on the coaches when they asked him about it.

I could have sworn ESPN reported that. But I saw that somewhere.
He wouldnt have just been benched for nothing.

Benching Butler not a discipline issue. Belichick made the call a few hours before game. Many coaches and players were shocked. Some players and coaches “furious” with Belichick, this is a move that divided the locker room.

I think he played on special teams. So he evidently wasn't fully "suspended". Plus, if's he's suspended, then why allow him to dress? The fact that he was standing on the sidelines suited up but not playing led to more of a distraction than him just not being there.

Obviously he did something above just "poor play" to warrant not starting or playing on defense...in a game where the offenses combined for the most yards in NFL history. Not Super Bowl history. NFL history! Certainly his coach has the authority to suspend him. But the manner in which he did it seems petty and may not sit well with the other players on the team. Particularly in light of the fact he may have been able to help just enough to give NE the win in a game where neither defense could stop the opponent.

No way I would have held him out of the Super bowl. They should have played him and then sent his sorry arse to Cleveland.

Why do the Pats players always seem to have this fear of the organization?

They don't pay as well as the rest of the league.

If you're a great player, you'll get picked up by tons of other teams.

But the players grovel like the Pats are Last Chance U.

Seems possible he broke a "Lombardi" rule. Bill probably thought visiting with his family was a sign of not being 100 % focused or something of that nature.

He missed the flight to Minneapolis.
He broke curfew.
He showed up at the hotel drunk. Twice.
He went off on a coach.
He was smoking weed in a team meeting.

Or...nothing at all. Becuase Belichick said he wasn’t benched for disciplinary reasons.

In other words, nobody outside of that organization has a friggin clue.
