Furthermore, there are going to be thousands of HS athletes affected by this. Schools in Lafayette and BR are going to be pushed to capacity (especially with COVID restrictions) which is going to force students to be shuffled around to different schools - meaning they will be ineligible.
OK. I feel very bad for these families. This is not Katrina. The number of people who will be displaced long enough to impact schooling/sports is a fraction of what it was for Katrina, and it will likely be for a shorter period of time.
Kids who attend a certain school in say, Orleans, are not going to be bumped to another school to allow in an evacuee kid. They will bump the evacuee kid.
Because of the above, there may be situations where the evacuee kid attends a public school that is close to, but outside, their attendance zone (based on their temporary residence). I think in those situations, these kids should be immediately eligible.
What happened with the LHSAA after Katrina was a disaster and should never have been allowed to happen. Perhaps these Laura rules are a bit too restrictive. But anyone suggesting a return to the Katrina rules, needs to have their heads examined.

Do you know how dirty and sleezy some schools acted to grab the best athletes after Katrina?

I’m fact one school is STILL benefitting from a Katrina rule

Thinking the LHSAA only has the best interests of kids at heart is like thinking the ncaa only does what is best for collegiate athletes.

How many kids are we talking about that this would affect? Seems like a relatively small issue considering other restrictions going on right now.

You can’t go by the normal rules in abnormal situations

My head coach was on ESPN after Katrina upset that his top players transferred after making the semis the year before.

they can still send their kids to Catholic. football be damned. decide what's more important, Catholic education or them playing football.
So if a kid is border line college ball material, or hell, just wants to finish his senior year graduating from a Catholic school AND having his last season of football before having to hang up his cleats, well screw that. He needs to prioritize because a freaking hurricane destroyed his house and school.
Ok.

Ok.
Hurricane Katrina hit. Then about 11 days later a stud defensive lineman from below New Orleans (I think he signed with LSU) was playing on national tv for Evangel. How convenient!
Sorry, but you have to have rules. Louisiana learned from 2005.
The kids will have a chance to play, they just have to be within a school zone of their temporary home.

Looks like Dutchtown is still going to be able to scoop up some talent.

The LHSAA walked it back after coming under fire for its horrendous rule.
Good for them for acknowledging their mistake and correcting it.

well firstly, will a kid who goes to private school really have to worry about where they're displaced? if playing football is that important, the family should move to a place with a private school they want to send their kids.
All kids that go to private schools have rich parents and have no limitations. They can live wherever, whenever, and their parents don’t have to worry about their own employment.

secondly, life's not fair. of all the things i'd be worried about after my house got destroyed, where or if my kid was going to play football would be VERY LOW on the list of priorities...
You’re obviously not a parent. If your family’s house was destroyed, and your kid’s life was turned upside down, one of your biggest priorities would be to provide them with some type of normalcy, especially after the last 6 months.
It’s not always about cheering junior on the football field. It’s providing your kids with activities they enjoy, and occupying their time and mind.

Not to mention that displaced families are buying houses for just six months.
Many are living with family/friends. A lot are doing long term Air BnB rentals where available. It’s incredibly shortsighted to believed people can just pick a district and find shelter there for six months.
