In Rapides, we have open enrollment for high school. My child chose to attend another school we are not zoned for. My child attended a private school before going to high school. So this will be our first year within the public school system. Is my child eligible to play varsity sports or with have to sit out a year? I've been told conflicting advice.

TIA

You can only play varsity for the zone you live in as a freshman. If you go to a private school, it will also have a zone attached to it.

Did he play varsity level sports at the private school he attended?

If not, then in Rapides, he should be able to choose whatever school he wants to, due to open enrollment and he should be immediately eligible.

That is how it use to work, but the LHSAA is so fickle...

I’ve never heard of open enrollments, so my answer might not be valid.

Not an expert, but since Rapides is open enrollment,I think they will be eligible for Varsity at any HS in Rapides if they did not play varsity as an 8th grader at the previous school.

Your child is not eligible as a Freshmen outside of his zoned school. That’s a Rapides Parish School Board rule. Because they create the open enrollment rule, they can enforce that particular rule. If your child is good enough as a Freshmen to play, find an address to use in that zone or make a legitimate move. Otherwise they can only play JV.

Outside of zone cannot play varsity as a freshman. This is relatively new, changed maybe 3 or 4 years ago.

Just ask Jerry Arledge. He seems to know a lot about Rapides Parish and open enrollment.

for the correct answer ask the principal or ad at the school in question. THey and they only can get a definite answer from the LHSAA.

It would be nuts to make a freshman sit out of varsity sports because of where their house is. If you let them in as a freshman, that’s where they ‘go’. Now, if he plays then transfers to his ‘home’ school…he should have eligibility issues.

Just a logical answer, not sure what the rules are.

Pretty cool he’s at the level to play varsity as a freshman.

You clearly do not hold a role in making policy for the LHSAA

I was bout to say… a kid should always be eligible at the start of 9th grade at the first high school they go to

For those wondering what he's talking about here, Arledge last week on local news:

quote:

“Well we have, ” says Arledge. “He’s doing a great job of coaching and recruiting. It’s legal in Rapides Parish. They have open enrollment. You can go to any school you want to. [Alexandria] does a great job of those kids in there.
