from Jerit Roser's chat on NOLA.COM

quote:

So we getting rid of this select/non select business?

Doubtful. There is a proposal on the agenda for Friday to do just that, but I don't see it passing. This year will also include class-specific voting, currently scheduled for Thursday, though, in which each classification can decide whether to play one joint playoff bracket at its own level.

The odds that passes for some classes are pretty slim. Others have a better chance, although I've been told by some coaches and principals I might be surprised by some schools who will vote for their classes to remain separate in the postseason. One coach told me not to expect any of the classes to come back together.

quote:

some of these matchups were dumb lopsided do folks really wanna see that?

One coach who favors the split staying in tact, at least in some form, asked me what the problem was with this past year.

I referenced winless teams making the playoffs or teams with two wins hosting games as being less than desirable situations in most people's minds. And he brushed it off as "what's wrong with that? what's wrong with letting the team play one more game?"

By the same token, when mentioning Superdome blowouts that drew criticism, he said, '"but what's wrong with letting those kids go experience playing there?"

the split probably saved a few coaching jobs by letting some schools make the "playoffs" when they wouldn't have made it before...

quote:

Is the proposal to move soccer to a power rating system likely to pass?

Not really sure. Soccer is always kind of an unknown for a lot of principals around the state. I don't remember the specifics of an item last year, but there was one I remember thinking kind of "why wouldn't this pass," and then it didn't. Soccer folks have their own culture, different from what many baseball, softball, basketball and football folks typically understand.

from the Advocate...

quote:

Winnfield Principal Jane Griffin was a key figure in the change. At the time, Griffin said she didn’t realize how significant the move was.
“When we proposed it, I didn’t think it (split championships) was going to be the significant,” Griffin said. “A lot has been said and written the past year. I haven’t read those things. But I do know if I had do it over again, I would, because it’s what’s best for my school. I’ve talked to others, even some select schools, who say they like it.”

how about what's best for the state?

quote:

“A student from our school won the (LHSAA) poster contest, so I got to see the 2A game and the 3A game that Friday,” Griffin said. “Many and Kinder were teams we played during the season, and it was exciting to see them play for a championship. They had always run into John Curtis or Evangel and never got the chance.

ok...

Proposal to segregate all sports being heard today. Publics worried about all the recruiting going on in swimming, wrestling, and volleyball.

Were you smoking medical marijuana? Kinder and Curtis weren't even in the same playoffs.

Publics voted in each division to keep them split. Some publics voted to remerge the classifications but were outvoted by the public schools scared of competition.

Trophies for everyone.

yeah let's let the schools who will never see it determine the state championship format...

5A vote 33-24 to remain split

4A vote 25-16 to remain split

2A vote 34-7 to remain split

1A vote 24-8 to remain split

1A and Division IV brackets to remain putting 0-10 teams in playoffs...

we will have 8 man football in 2015...

Is an explanation of how the power rankings would work located on LHSAA's site?

For those that have reviewed it, is it a legitimate ranking system or a farce to be put in place to appease the non select schools?

Only "non-select" public schools voted?

mostly it's gonna be there so soccer schools have to put their schedules and results online like the other team sports... with playoff brackets as big as they are, i don't think any team in any sport has to be worried about being left out if they can truly contend for a state championship

right now the coaches of the playoff teams vote from 1 to 31 leaving out their own team, and those results determine the seedings. top two in each district automatically make it, and wild cards are selected based on record against teams in your same division (I=5A, II=4A, III=3A-C)

there's another proposal to play the soccer regular season in 3 divisions like it is right now, but to split Division III in the playoffs into III-3A, III-2A, and III-1A-B-C

Not sure about the LHSAA site but there is a lot of details on it on the LaPrepSoccer site.

It has nothing to do with select v. non select. They are trying to change it from the way it has been which is that the coaches from all the teams that make the playoffs vote on the seedings for their division. Currently, 1st and 2nd place teams in each district make the playoffs and the remaining wild card slots are filled according to division winning percentage. With the proposal it will be only first place team in each divisison that automatically makes it and then it will go by power points - which will also be used to seed.

Thanks for the explanation guys.

I've never viewed the soccer playoff system as a flawed one. Is there a reason they are looking to bring about this change?
