I wouldn't be shocked to see the SEC stand pat.

This is what I think will happen for a while. There's too many hurdles for the major schools who might want to leave their conferences to clear (bigger buyouts, TV rights signed over). I also doubt the SEC, B1G or PAC want to settle on the schools they add and it doesn't seem like the ACC wants to add a 16th at all. The biggest thing I could see happening would be the Big 12 adding 2 more schools like Louisville, Cincy, USF, etc. to get back to 12.

And for the money they bring in through tv money, they take a major hit in travel expenses/accommodations. Especially if travel costs continue to rise. A 3 hour team charter to Boise from Louisville for not just football but basketball and then all of your non-revenue sports puts a dent in that TV money in a hurry. And they're not going to sign the kind of deal that the Big 12, Big 10, SEC, or ACC will sign.

I read an article last month that said the Big East was probably going to get between 10-15 million per team because NBC was desperate to get into college football. That is a huge jump for the schools. They are not going to be compete against the big boys but they will survive unless the Big 12 raids them to go to 16 like someone posted earler

ETA: I would add a link, but I'm in class at Mississippi College and they block search engines in this building.

Hope things stand pat at 12 max for everyone.

Do you mean everyone else? The ACC and SEC are already at 14.

That $50MM is just the first number in the negotiation. If someone really wants to leave, it will be worked down to manageable.

this. I love how that number has become gospel when it is anything but

Pretty hard to shop around when you've signed a GoR for 13 years.

I don't get the GOR. The value of the rights associated with each school are so uneven, I can't see why the teams with more value would ever agree to it. Texas' rights are very valuable, but Iowa State not much at all. Why would a school like Texas - which would be fine no matter what transpired with conference realignment - promise so much, while other schools promise relatively little? There just has to be some language in there where schools like Texas have an out or maybe it's up to a certain monetary limit.

That is a good question and I don't have an answer. In any conference, there are wildly varying media values across schools. I suppose Texas would agree to the grant for a variety of reasons including that they truly want to be in the Big 12 for the next 13 years. Maybe there's an out we don't know about in the contract for the GOR but it stands to reason it will be a tough out. I simple don't believe Texas wants to be independent.

I wonder if the ACC vs B1G Challenge will still take place in basketball?

The only conferences that i think will expand in the next 1-2 years will be the Big 12 and Big East. I think that the Big 12 will add either Louisville, Cincinnati, BYU or New Mexico to get back to 12 teams. I think the Big East will either keep adding mid majors or eventually just fold. The conferences that could see the biggest change are CUSA/MWC with the leftover Big East football schools. I know the ACC is saying the dont want another team but come on....UConn??? You're telling me that the ACC wouldnt take UConn? Poor Rutgers!
