For the last time. Its not about the child rape. That is for the courts. Its the cover up of child rape for the purposes of protecting athletics. That is why the NCAA should get involved.
There was nothing to protect athletics from but bad PR. If you want to reach and say not having that negative PR gave them an advantage and that's punishable, I guess you could but that's a huge reach.

Penn state generates as much or more than LSU does in football.
They arent gonna de empahsize shite.
Nor should they.
Clean house and start over is appropriate.

Money. Plain and simple. Money. Football is the biggest money maker for the AD and a huge black eye like this cuts off their cash cow. They did it to protect their athletic department.

No. The football team or any athletic team for that matter did not get any benefit from this situation.
The coaches, AD, and university president did not violate any NCAA rules besides be horrible people. The NCAA is not there to regulate personal behavior. It is there to help provide a level playing field for college athletics. If it starts to even tangentially regulate personal behavior, then it'll be slippery slope for when someone else does a horrible thing.

I agree. They're about to lose hundreds of millions in settlement money they aren't giving up football money too.

do you really think that school will self impose the death penalty?
Well that's the test, isn't it? What's most important to them as a learning institution and its community.

recruiting and donations would have been as high if people knew a coach had raped children in the lockerroom shower and the head coach covered it up?
really......

quote:actually, predictions based on previous abuse scandals show that the average settlement is about $1-1.5 million. i mentioned it before in another thread, but there's a link on spencer hall's every day should be saturday site to an attorney's analysis. it gets into how the insurance the university carries would likely cover all of it, and the university endowment is likely not to be significantly impacted.

ETA: changed the grammar before sophandros could call me out again.

O'Brien is having a good offseason recruiting so far and they got 208 mil in donations last year(2nd highest in school history).

This isn't your ordinary abuse scandal. With a pretty much open and shut case on the school's liability lawyers will be out for blood.

last year and up until the freeh report...all the delusional were saying Joe Pa wasnt involved.
now we know he orchestrated the coverup

Yes. A bold move must be made by the Board of Trustees to try to reform their image for the long term. Otherwise, they will go down in history as a Jim Jones like cult culture, as a program that put football ahead of the rape of children.
Posted on 7/16/12 at 7:25 pm to saintsfan22
quote:and that helps fuel the argument for the death penalty or some organizational punishment. the program was protected. kids lives are wrecked, a monster's in prison, coach is dead, the university leadership is likely going to prison for some period of time, and the university looks morally bankrupt, but we oughta be in good shape for 2012!
