Nasty crash in the intermediate sprint probably ends Philipsen's tour

That was nasty. It was supposed to be a relatively calm day too. What a bummer

Absolute bummer. He was certainly going to do well this year, shame his tour ends in day 3

Green Jersey is wide open now. Milan and Merlier are by far the best flat sprinters, but Bini and Groves are much better climbers and Groves will be the focus with MVDP leading him out.

In the last 50 years we’ve had a record 7 time winner, two of the four total 5 time winners, and a 4 time winner.

several crashes in the last 3 km.

Photo finish. Merlier wins it by a fraction of an inch

Yeah and he’s better than 3 of the 4 by a wide margin and his only comp is Eddy. And even then Eddy was competing against a peloton that was nowhere near as professional as today’s peloton is.

These sprint points and finishes are like a demolition derby when everyone is all fired up. Chaos…like a monkey in a sidecar.

I missed the start. Any Americans to keep an eye on? Anyone capable of winning a stage?

Matteo Jorgenson has been up front in all his mullet and moustache glory.
He currently sits in 5th in the GC at +10s

Powell is also in the top 15. And Kuss in the 30's.

All this will obviously change as the mountain and hilly stages begin.

Either way it's nice having a core group of US riders to cheer for over the last half decade, including Kuss' Vuelta title a couple of years ago

That would be Quinn Simmons on Lidl Trek. US road champion. Wearing the stars and stripes. He’s been pulling long days for the team.

Here he is at TD Suisse this year:

Jorgensen is on Visma-Lease a Bike. He’s sitting at #5 in the GC after today.

The Cannibal was just different. I am not very old-school biased, but if Eddie had come up in the modern professional cycling world with its training and chemistry, I think he would have been untouchable in the GTs. He likely wouldn't have been allowed to be the supreme all-rounder he was, but I think he would have won all the GTs in a year two, if not three times. His classics/monuments/sprinting numbers would be down, but I think his GT numbers would have been even more impressive.

I would love to be able to see a TdF with a modern trained Eddie, Pog and Lance all with equally strong teams and with a brutally hard course and see who could prevail.

Hate to see Jasper out. The peloton doesn't look nervous early in this tour; they look angry. I suppose it makes sense as the GC teams have been serious from the gun and smaller teams start to realize ink for their sponsers is going to be hard to come by.

DId the rider on his right have his foot come off the pedal and veer in to him? looking at stills.

How does your foot come off the pedal when clicked in? they were moving in a straight line and no drama/stress.

It looked like Coquard started to sprint and collided with the Intermarche rider and reacted or got pushed over into Philipsen. Coquard came unclipped or unclipped in the process.

If the Cannibal was truly different he would be competitive with Pog across the classics and GTs, and I don’t think modern GT design is conducive to dominance from Merckx like it does for Pog. Short tts, shorter stages, and Merckx body size would be a large hindrance

IMO a modern grown and developed Eddie would destroy Pogacar in most one-day races, but my point was a modern Eddie wouldn't have been allowed to race as many races if he was a triple threat to the GTs like I think he would be. I also think a modern Eddie would have been 10-12 pounds lighter and have a much higher power to weight ratio and FTP than classic Eddie. Everyone talks about them in the same sentence now, even Merckx himself, but I think Tadej needs a lot more added to his palmarès before I will call them equal.

One thing not to forget is a modern Eddie would have had his leg length discrepancy diagnosed at the very beginning of his career and bikes built and fitted to account for this. That change alone would have made him more formidable than he already was, even before modern training and chemistry.
