GLENDALE, Ariz.-We say it every year, and it won't change. Paying full prices for preseason football: insane.
Tonight at Az: 1. 32 penalties called (26 accepted, for 165 yds).
2. Five flags in last 1:50.
3. 3 hours, 37 mins.
4. Starting QBs combined to throw 1 pass.

32 flags. Lord almighty. Nails on the chalkboard.

This new rule is going to kill the game this year. Check out this penalty.

If this hit by #AZCardinals S Travell Dixon is a penalty now, we are all in trouble. This is textbook.

Yea that was a normal tackle. I guess there was a small amount of incidental helmet contact?

I think the big question that’s going to come up is how many people follow football because they actually love the game vs how many people follow football because they gamble, play fantasy football, or just see it as an opportunity to have friends over.

I mean, I know when we host parties to watch an Auburn game, there will be three or four guys really into it, one girl who wants to be cool and is really into it, six girls chatting in another room about whatever, and a few guys who don’t care that much but came over because they were invited.

Out of the dozen or so people watching, around 1/3 really care.

So how much will the NFL suffer from such a change with new penalties? Probably not as much as it should.

This is a really good point.

There was a worse call earlier where the Chargers TE caught a pass over the middle, took 3 steps, safety comes up to tackle him and is called for hitting a defenseless receiver.

I watch it way more when I gamble and I gamble on football a lot. But I don’t know if I still will now that these stupid penalties will make the games way less predictable. So I probably won’t watch as much either.

Great point. The vast majority of people who watch sports are extremely casual fans. They barely know any players besides the stars (a huge chunk may only know their qb and a wr).

Sadly the quality of the product is largely irrelevant to people to don't care or notice quality.

The hitting rules are only going to get worse and worse.

This is simply untrue. The majority of fans play Fantasy and know most offensive skill positions

It's like this every season. The refs will call a bunch of penalties during the preseason and everyone freaks out then they tone them down a lot for the regular season.

If a Don Shula-coached team comprised this matchup, there'd be like 10 penalties called TOPS and basically none would be against his team (he was head of the NFL Competition Committee, interpret that what you will but his Dolphins teams were almost never penalized in his career)

I don't think the majority of people tuning into the NFL every week play fantasy football.

People who follow sports closely underestimate the number of people who just tune in because there's nothing else on and don't really keep up with much of anything.

Those third that care aren't going to care enough to invite the others that already don't really care over. Thus they lose everyone.

I mean ffs the guy was running downhill at him. He has to lean forward in some capacity or he’s just going to get smoked. Seemed like a fantastic open field tackle that was extremely safe to both the ball carrier and defender himself.

If they’re going to be this liberal in the interpretation of leading with the helmet then it has to be a reviewable call. These are the types of calls that are going to cause people to turn games off in disgust.

Said it before and I'll say it again...

Goodell and the ever changing rules to soften the game are running more people away from the NFL than kneeling ever will.

oddly enough its gambling and fantasy football that keeps me interested in the rest of the NFL besides the Saints.

the inconsistencies of the flags is also super annoying. I think that as the season goes the refs let the things go a little more. That's how I would rather them do it all season.

but I think two big reasons we see a lot of flags out of the gates these days are:
1) Refs want to set the tone
2) the limited amount of padded practices in training camp plus not a lot of work by the starters during preseason games will no doubt have an effect.

there were also a lot of flags in the Thursday Night games last year if I remember right. I know they won't get rid of TNF because of the TV deals and what have you but it just seems silly to be "all about player safety" yet they want a quick turnaround from 2 teams every week.

I think Thursday Night Football has cheapened the anticipation of Monday Night Football also. Then again, Monday Night Football has had some craptastic matchups in recent years.
