I'm a Cousins fan, mainly because he's the best QB the Skins have had in my lifetime (36), but he chokes a lot and has dicked around the Skins too much for my liking.

I have to question your Redskin fandom if you think that Cousins is better than Rypien. I mean the guy was a Super Bowl MVP and QB'd the greatest team in NFL history..

Had a great great season and a couple of decent seasons, but he wasn't a great quarterback. That Super Bowl team is badly underrated though.

Before Bortles started playing so well I would have said Jacksonville.

The 92 Skins were incredible. Vastly underrated, no doubt.

who are you gong to get who is comparable?

If you're an owner worried about financials, that is important.

But as a fan where winning/super bowl is likely the only thing you care about, I don't think asking who will you get that is comparable is the correct question to ask.

The relevant question is can the team realistically have playoff success if they give Cousins near $100mil guaranteed. I think we all know the answer is no, so you're wasting 5 years if you give him the money because there isn't a comparable guy to take his place.

Offer him a deal more in line with how good he is(or is not) and when he does not accept, you let him walk and it's time to restart.

This is kind of a dumb question, but is there really a huge difference between paying him 20-ish versus 30 mil? I know guys like shel and SFP say you have to stick to your guns on a middling guy like Cousins, but there has to be some value in overpaying for a known commodity versus going back on the market.
I certainly see your point, and I'd concede that point if you're talking about paying one of the true elite QBs an extra $10mil.

Granted, I think it's meaningful and would hurt the team, but I'd certainly give Rodgers the extra $10mil if it were truly a decision between keeping/losing him.

With Cousins, I think it matters...the way I look at it is they haven't been able to get the job done with him NOT making $30mil, so how will they get it done with even less money to give other players?

Cousins just isn't the answer from a winning standpoint.

But, is that even possible? I know some people have said just get a guy like Tyrod Taylor instead.

Tyrod is every bit as good as Cousins, they're right in the same tier/realm.

I'd take Tyrod in a heartbeat at the salary he'll command over the salary Cousins will fetch.

The advanced guys do a great job of parcing QB stats out. Cousins is a guy usually propped by those around him, WRs making him look better, etc. Tyrod is the complete opposite as he makes the Bills offense respectable I guess you can say while having no help whatsoever in the passing game, though they do usually have a solid run game.

You put Cousins on this Jags team and they are going to the Super Bowl next year.
Even after you shed the near $25 mil in salary difference from Bortles and his $6mil to Cousins and his upwards of $30mil?

Simple answer is no.

i mean if you don't re-sign cousins b/c he doesn't win enough, signing Taylor, who has won less, seems idiotic (based on the argument)

Tyrod is just as good and cheaper, which would allow you to work on other areas...that sounds hardly idiotic.

Good points, dude. I hope we get a Keenum v Bortles/Tyrod Super Bowl to see if the game changes.

He's not just as good... His numbers are deceiving. He misses on a ton of passes. He's not as bad as some make him out to be, but he's not a good QB

Of course bc his record vs Dallas is bad and a contract like 30 million a year would kill the rest of the roster.

Agree to disagree, Tyrod is every bit as good as Cousins IMO.

Pretty sure it's been the case with the advanced metrics for at least 2 years now, maybe 3.

you're talking about saving a small bit in salary (it's not like Tyrod is coming cheap. the Bills are not resigning him for a reason) for, as argued, equal wins (at best). if you don't re-sign Cousins you have to blow up the team and start all over

also this is ignoring the fact that Tyrod is almost assuredly not an option b/c he's not a fit for that offense
