My question is why are parents down with it?

That way Jaxon and Braylen can delay a year before having to pull a shift at the factory

I think a lot of boys could benefit in grade school from starting school a year later.
this is what I plan on doing. Also doesn’t hurt that he’ll have a year of development on all the other boys when school sports starts

havent read whole thread but imo you should never do it for athletic purposes, that is just one of the small benefits.

my rule of thumb is every kid should graduate at 18 and this is 100% for boys. essentially as a senior you have to start making life altering decisions and an extra year of maturity helps along with being under the guidance of parents for another year.

now if you are turning 19 in April or may of senior year...totally good with that. 19 in September of senior year...yea thats a little much in most cases.

i held my middle kid back, he would have started college at 17, which i felt was too young, held him back in 1st grade so that he will be 18 whole senior year and turn 19 in the first semester of college.

I did not hold my oldest back. he will turn 18 in april of senior year. He is stupid smart and kills it academically but he absolutely could use another year of maturity but turning 19 before you graduate didnt sit well with me. but this boy has no street smarts and the real world is prolly going to eat him alive.

as far as doing it for sports...that should be only a small portion when weighing the decision. but I do believe every boy should graduate at 18. if that means holding them back in elementary school...fine.

Kids in travel ball can play down a year if they are held back. If a kid is 10 and he is held back he can play 9U. Im not making this up. It's that ridiculous.

Travel ball should wake the frick up as to what they're encouraging with these grade exceptions and not only eliminate grade exceptions but move the cutoff date to mirror what schools use which is September or October.

can only have 3 per team now. but i 100% agree. should be no grade hold backs until 14u imo. thats 8th grade. let them play with their class at that point.

If my kid was born in july or august i might wait until next year to start kindergarten. Otherwise its dumb

why would you not let your kid start school and then hold him back in the most advantageous situation? for example if you feel a kid can learn more being held back in say 4th grade over others...why not start him?

i have no idea if 4th grade is best grade to hold back, was just picking one at random.

Classmates can be pretty tough on kids that are held back.

I’m in the Jackson Metro Area. Hartfield Academy. They actually just got sanctioned for improper recruiting. Two of the coaches have to sit out a year and they can’t participate in the playoffs

I think it's more likely they just want to give their kid a better chance at being successful.

I am guess you don’t see educated parents doing this. Likely something poors do thinking this will make their kid the next Tom Brady

more the opposite. because educated parents try to give their kids every advantage they can. Many times this isnt 100% for athletics but that is 1 side benefit.

depends on the kid. if he is being held back strictly for age, is a good student, good athlete and a leader...na

now if the kid is not a good student, quite, not a leader, not athletic etc...i could see that.

100% this

i will say i think should be a simple rule. hold back whenever, Cant Turn 19 before Jan 1st your senior year to be eligible.

Probably shouldn’t be held back.

Impossible to know what would have happened had we not held my son back…he might be committed to LSU right now…who knows? Can’t worry about that, just look forward and make the best decision each time you’re faced with them…we held him back so we’re going down this path.

It is so prevalent that youth sports started letting kids play by grade instead of age.

That’s wrong. Should be age until school sports in Jr High. My son got screwed out of his position in 9th because a youth sport teammate had already played there for a year…sucks, but that’s how it goes.

disagree. boys should not graduate at 17 imo. many reasons outside of sports

and you make the decision in elementary school and you are making it based on what you think will be best for them 8 years or more down the line.

go ask long time HS teachers that teach advanced kids or go ask a coach who has been doing it for 25 plus years and they will tell you the same thing.

you wont convince them, and you will not convince them there are other reasons too outside of sports.

its teh educated parents and the upper middle class/wealthy that do this. many always have. sets the kids up for success in academics, sports and overall in life.

in Louisiana, you cant do that.

you cant hold back after 5th grade without losing a year and cant hold back in hs at all. you get 4 years to play 4. period
