Even though he went crazy for a while, dude was still a beast in the ring in his younger days. I used to love to watch him fight. Boxing ain't what it used to be if you ask me.
No, it sure isn't. Have to quote Rocky III on this, "You was hard and you was nasty and you had this cast-iron jaw but then the worst thing happened to you, that could happen to any fighter. You got civilized." Mike got civilized, with the worst of the worst.

Why exactly do we need to be reminded of this?

Did anyone forget?

You're right. We need another Lebron vs MJ thread instead.

At least, that is a debate.

Is there anyone on here who would assert that Tyson was not a beast? Surely, there is no one that stupid....never mind, there probably is ... probably some millenial.

No he wasn't, he steamrolled through the best at that time with ease. His downfall began by marrying Robin Givens, getting rid of Kevin Rooney and of course aligning himself with Don King.

I've never heard as many excuses for a fighter than I've heard for Mike Tyson:

Cus died, Givens and her mother( whom he abused/ terrorized), Desiree Washington, Don King,,etc.....Many boxers overcome chaotic personal lives.

Had Cus D'Amato lived 10 years longer, it would be a totally different story

Cus died years before Tyson unified the Heavyweight belt. By all accounts (from Teddy Atlas and others) Cus was extremely permissive of the troubled teenage Mike and basically spoiled him. Soft disciplinarian

Adult Tyson with tens of millions in his bank account / inflated ego is not listening to Cus.

What Tyson would have been with a better support system and his head on straight is one of the great sports what ifs.

The competition was so so, but prime Tyson's KO reel was legendary. Marvis Frazier is my personal favorite.

This. Tyson went unbeaten for 5 years after Cus died. He went something like 25-0 in those 5 years after the death until running into Douglas. I think the "if Cus hadnt died" excuse is used a little too much when talking about Tyson's career. The most dominant parts of his career that most remember were almost all after Cus.

I do agree with Rooney being fired having a major impact though - at least on his in ring skill/style/preparation for each fight. But by then there were so many people in Tysons ear and his fame had gotten so out of hand I think it probably still was only a matter of time until he self destructed in the ring regardless of who was in his corner. He just wasnt mature enough to handle being that famous and it would have clashed with his boxing career & shortened his in ring prime at some point regardless, imo.

maybe a casual sports fan might have him overrated, but none of the legit boxing writers has him as a top 10 heavyweight

KO's - Youtube

The average person today would recognize nobody nor their name from his list of KO's.

Let's not act like he was fighting Frazier, Ali and Foreman.

His biggest victory was against a light-heavyweight whose claim to fame was knocking out Gerry Cooney.

This was the Heavyweight Champ?

Tyson ran through a sport that was on it's last legs and totally vacant with talent.

He wasn’t a boxer, he was a fighter. There was little technique - he was there to hurt you. Pinklon Thomas was lucky to survive - Spinks was terrified.

It was mesmerizing to watch - you felt you may see a man die in the ring.

His quote “Everyone has a plan until they punched in the mouth” is one of my favorites.

This one looks almost exactly like the uppercuts Tyson would throw for the first minute and a half in Punch-Out.

Any of them would completely obliterate you.

we will never know how good Tyson was because his record is piled up with dozens of tomato cans
