This is about marketability

Pretty sure a lot of former pro athletes have gotten paid for their likeness. I seem to recall a guy with the last name of Jordan who made a buck or two as a retired athlete

Golfers get sponsors very often. Good for JR. I wouldn't mind seeing him in an event similar to the match, maybe paired up with someone cool.

The university announced on October 8, 2021 that Smith had qualified to play in the Aggies' upcoming tournament, the Phoenix Invitational hosted by nearby Elon University, on October 11 and 12. Under team rules, all golfers must qualify for regular-season tournaments in practice unless they were among the team's top two golfers in its previous tournament. Smith qualified for the Phoenix Invitational by one stroke,[62] shooting rounds of 83 and 78 (respectively 12 and 7 over par) on the event's first day.

The players largely police themselves in most of the tournaments.

If you were playing with JR Smith on an isolated hole on the back nine, and you saw him improve his lie, would you rat him out?

JR Smith lives and plays by his own rules.

Since JR played professionally beyond college, I thought he wouldn't have eligibility to be an amateur anymore.

Or does that rule only apply to their specific sport. As in could a professional golf player go back to college and play soccer.

J.R.'s golf handicap is around five. The three you mentioned have handicaps under three.

Seems not uncommon for former pro baseball players to go back and play college football: Matt Mauck for example
