The three you mentioned have handicaps under three.

Curry gets overrated as a golfer bc he's a media darling and a nice guy. But during the NBA season he doesn't have time to keep a handicap that low. Smoltz was notorious for playing on most all the days he wasn't pitching. Curry didn't play very well in The Match when he was in it and I don't recall him having a great showing at the last big pro am in California. I think Romo and Smoltz are probably a little better bc they have more time on their hands. JR might be able to catch up to those guys if he is getting some good coaching. I saw a video of him at some tournament and his swing looks good.

I just went by what I read about the three players that were mentioned. Curry's handicap was the highest at just under 3 and Romo's was 1.8. While all of them are excellent golfers, none of them are PGA tour ready.

Seems not uncommon for former pro baseball players to go back and play college football: Matt Mauck for example

Chris Weinke won the Heisman at 28 years old having already had a minor league baseball career.
