I get announcing retirement a year early in pro sports but it doesn’t make a lot of sense in college. It hurts recruiting until the next coach gets announced and hangs uncertainty over the program for a year.

Why would it hurt recruiting? Scheyer is responsible for the last 3-4 classes that have come through Durham

Scheyer is almost the same age as Coach K when he took the Duke job, but the job is so much bigger at this point.

I wouldn’t give a 16 year old the keys to a new Ferrari, even if he was a good student who didn’t get in trouble.

I’ve guessed that Scheyer was going to get the job for a few years now although I thought it was going to be in 2024.

The Brad Stevens situation and the timing (not more than 3 hours) makes it interesting but ultimately, I don’t think that hire will happen, at least not initially.

Because players may not want to come play for a team where they know a shake-up at the top is eminent?

no matter how legendary, never a big fan of letting the outgoing coach name his successor.

The amazing thing about Krzyzewski is that he's as dirty and sleazy as any other NCAA basketball coach but has upheld this image of a man who does things the right way.

It will definitely hurt. They aren’t going to only get top 300 recruits and walkons all of a sudden but a lot of guys who came had the expectation that if they come to Duke they will be in the top 10 all year, likely win close to 30 games, etc. He’s had a very good track record with one and dones this decade as well.

I’m sure players like Scheyer because he isn’t some raging hardass and can relate to the pressures of being a big recruit but it’s one thing to look at him as a helpful assistant and another when he’s the head coach.

Then he’ll make some excuse and retire mid-season.

Yep, I see a Steve Spurrier incoming.

I think a lot of older coaches that had to go through the complete bullshite covid seasons are just tired of it all at this point and are saying "I'm out"

If they're losing, his back will be hurt. If they win, he'll go give the other team a speech in the locker room.
