The WR dropped a TD pass is how I read that sequence.

If you get a chance to go vertical with a chance for 7 vs a 10 yard 3rd down conversion you take it in a game where sustaining drives is gonna be tough.

Not when you’re up 17 and chewing clock

Mateer is a dumbass

If he had scrambled, Kirk would have been on the telestrator pointing out the wide open receiver that "could have been a touchdown".

Chewing clock in the 1H is an interesting approach.

We will have to agree to disagree then. I want my quarterback to be looking to throw first and run as a last resort. If you have a wide open receiver and you can make the throw, I want my qb throwing it 100/100 times.

f the wide arse open receiver catches a ball that hits him in his hands, it’s a touchdown. Mateer made the correct play

First off, it was a running back. Second, he was rolling to his left, threw against his body downfield. The only reason anyone is saying it’s correct call because the ball hit him in the hands. 3 things could have happened on that play and two of them would have not been good. He had a first down 100%. You take the first down, especially when he’s been off target all night. It was a low percentage play.

Weasel posting alert

We saw your preferred QB, play against OU. An injured Nuss-Bus special would have been the better option

You might want to steer away from QB threads. Youre clueless on the matter

When you’re driving to end the first half and you get the ball to start the second half?

It’s the correct approach

Also, the field was so wide open that Mateer might have gone 20-30 yards or even scored if he tucked it and ran.

What lol. Did you watch the replay he MIGHT have gotten 5-10 yards. They were closing that space down quickly in the angle showed behind him.

This is such and old and tired cliche about football. This isn’t the 70’s anymore.

That was a game changing play. If he gets the first right there. they may end up driving down and scoring again while eating up the rest of
the half. Instead it turned into a 10 of swing in about 2 minutes. Momentum chances sides for the remainder of the game.

The drive you’re referencing started with 6:50 to go in the 2Q and the score was 17-7 with Bama getting the ball to start the second half and you’re saying you want to run clock at that point after Bama had just put together a 75 yard scoring drive when Bama has multiple time outs left?

I don’t think you’re going to find many coaches that would agree with that take.

You go clock kill mode in the first half with an offense that’s averaging 1.7 YPC and you’re going to get beat.

Criticizing a guy for taking a downfield shot to a wide open receiver when he made a perfect throw is just a bad take.

He had an opportunity to scramble and pick up a first down easily but decided to launch the ball downfield instead.

Yeah it should have been a touchdown. Hindsight is 20/20 goober.

He made the right choice. He can't be held responsible for a player dropping a near-perfect pass.

You have a receiver running wide open down the middle of the field, make a great throw and he drops it. Mateer made the right decision, you take that all day long. You have to trust that your team mate isn't shaving points and is going to make that catch.
