I can tell you the practice times. School lets out at 3:18. On the field for stretching by 4. Done practice by 6. Film after practice for an hour. That's M-W before a Frieday game. Thursday was an hour of practice and no film. Saturday morning was stretching, walk through for the next weeks opponent and film. That practice would start at 8-9 am and watch the full game film after. Be home by noon on Saturday. The only time that we had morning practice during the week was during camp prior to school starting. That lasts for 1 week of 2 a days. You do have to go to class during the day and do your homework at night after practice.
For all of the complaints on this site about participation trophies, that is the antithesis of what is taught at Curtis. You are taught to work for a goal and not be satisfied until you obtain it through working your tail off. If you fail to get it, treat the opponent that beat you with dignity and respect. District championships are not something that is celebrated. Only state titles. It's a different mentality. People think that it's all about the "star" football players, what makes Curtis special is the average kids who play over their heads. Yes it helps to have a Jonathan Wells, Joe McKnight, Malachi Dupre or Willie Allen but that's 4 players over 20 years. Curtis also teaches that everyone has value regardless of your race or gender.
To recap, Curtis teaches hard work, discipline, working towards a goal, that there is only one champion, lose with dignity, everyone has value and race does not differentiate us. It seems to me that these values are exactly what our kids should be taught

The Willie Allen thing is one of the most genuine things they've actually done regarding football. So I'm not sure why that's directed at me.
Let's not pretend they don't do scummy things though

I went for 9-12th and graduated in '98. The lower school kids did practice during their PE hour back then as well but they don't lift weights or have the same after school practice schedule. Usually their games are in the afternoon right after school.

So does Parkview get that state title or does it remain vacant?
We lost one in soccer to a school with a Mexican kid from nowhere who scored 40 plus goals one season. In ot with 1 minute left after thinking we had winning goal but great save and counter with defender slipping. Find out year later player was completely ineligible. But do we get trophy nope. Do they send it back nope. Just an astrix by their name saying the title was later taken away. Big deal

I think their name is removed from the State Championship program for that year. Basically it.
Having talked to JT Curtis and his family for years and coached against him multiple times I can say that he does genuinely try and help students at his school (not just athletes). John Curtis was always a class act every time we had to line up against them.
I think this ruling was more of a witch hunt than anything else.

The story of Curtis and their football program is much more in between the die hard haters and love fest posters in this thread. Curtis gives a lot of kids who wouldn't have made it other places a chance to succeed at their school and rally them around a sport to do it. Many of these kids get offers to play sports in college that they wouldn't have had an opportunity to attend otherwise. At the same time, academics often gets sacrificed except for the really eager students who keep up with their work or have someone forcing them to do it, and many times kids get away with stuff that only gets them a stern talking to or suspension that would have merited a dismissal from other schools. You pretty much have to piss on JT's desk while smoking a doobie to get kicked out of Curtis.

Yes, if they did receive work-study they had to work.
I attended a catholic school, played ball, and the "work study" the kids on the football team did was, they had to sweep the busses after practice and games, and unload the water coolers. Took maybe 10 minutes, and they would get 3 hours of work study "credit".

In reality, the Curtis way is to take average to above average players, teach them a system that has been absolutely perfected, and play the system. It helps when you have three times as many players as the opponent.
You are right about one thing, though - not a lot of star players, as evidenced by the fact that very few of them have had success in college, much less NFL.
Reminds me of some of the Florida teams under Spurrier. The system works, no doubt, but it does nothing to get the players ready for the next level. '
Also, they start teaching the "system" in middle school. So by the time the kids get to 9th grade, most of them know the system, and it's just a matter of putting on size.

Work study at Curtis is real work. They don't hire crews to do manual labor like Catholic schools do.

Name a successful football coach in the metro area at the highest level and I'm sure he had some shithead moments mixed in with moments where he helped kids in need.

Every kid I know that played football at Curtis has been held back a year in order to get one more year of football out of them. Pretty ridiculous. I do think the coaches were genuine in this case.

Jay Roth doesn't facilitate the hold back of athletes for athletic purposes.
He can't offer parents a job at rummel like the curtis's can either
Does he recruit? Yea, I'm sure. Not as blatant as coach Corey used to though

Which championship does JC vacate, 2013?

Yes. Although there are still 25+ in their shrine so they'll be just fine

I know 2 that played for Curtis that were held back in the 8th grade.
Posted on 9/2/16 at 11:52 pm to topcat88
I didn't hold back. In fact, I played in a D3 college game for Mississippi College while I was still 17. I didn't turn 18 until until end of September my freshman year of college. My parents were not approached about me holding back.
