Yeah OK I'll believe that when I see him actually step away.

We're not talking about a couple million here.

He can hang with Adam LaRoche and his boy. Fun times.

Wait, what?
I don't follow MLB or it's contracts. Is this normal there?

For high end players, yeah... It's pretty run of the mill for decent bat guys to get overpaid to come close to or once they hit free agency

I know big contracts have been the norm for some time, but 200MM in guaranteed money? Damn.

They're all guaranteed.

His last contract was $38 mil, so he's eating good. Would you rather be rich and content, or stupid rich and miserable?
Not saying I agree 100%, but I can see where he's coming from.

I would rather suck it up for 8 years and be stupid rich.

All hitters go through slumps. He is talking like a loser.

40M is rich.
200M is your great grandkids being rich.

MLB contracts are just stupid as could be. I dont know why anyone would guarantee anyone anything for 10+ years like votto and stanton. It gives the player no incentive to continually work harder. It makes sense only bc contracts always goes up, which is just stupid in itself. Votto is 32 years old, who on earth thinks he's going to be an MVP caliber hitter from say 35-40 years old. Very few guys are still good at 35+. Even pujols as great as he was has been trash for a while now, sure he can hit bombs still, but he's no longer a .330 hitter with bombs like he was early.

Yeah, he hit .314/.459/.541 and finished top 3 in MVP voting last year. I don't know why he's talking retirement after one bad month.

I don't know why he's talking retirement
I think we're just reading into it too much.

The very long term deals for high end free agents can be very silly. Nobody pays for past performance quite like MLB.

I think that they should get half pay when they're on the disabled list. Union wouldn't agree. But it gives teams relief. Really help out on injury prone players with bad contracts.

I agree to an extent. A young guy like Harper, trout, machado, arenado, Stanton I don't mind giving them contracts because you will be getting incredible prime years from them. But guys who hit FA at 30-31 like pujols, miggy, and others I wouldn't touch. Let them walk. You're paying them 8-9 years for only 2 good years of production before they fall off a cliff.

I kinda like how the Pirates and Marlins did with marte, polanco, and yelich. Lock them up for some prime years for far less than market value if they were to hit FA. Sure they're taking some risk in signing ten early before they have more than 1 good season, but it's less risk than taking on the big contracts of proven guys who are older

Votto seems like a dude that is very hard on himself and has some anger issues. I think he's had some mental issues in the past as well.
I've always liked him and I'm happy that he passed on his best traits to his best impersonator, Anthony Rizzo.
