can i see that list?

Votto might not be top 5 but he's clearly top 10 and neck and neck with Paul Goldschmidt among the best 1B in baseball. Here's my top 10 list right now.

1. Mike Trout
2. Josh Donaldson
3. Clayton Kershaw
4. Kris Bryant
5. Bryce Harper
6. Manny Machado
7. Jose Altuve
8. Paul Goldschmidt
9. Joey Votto
10. Mookie Betts

And among the position players I have ranked ahead of him, Votto has the highest OBP and third highest OPS only behind Harper and Trout during the last two years. If you're a person who heavily values offense, a case can easily be made for Votto being in the top 5.

i mean, you responded to barry's post which mentioned "hitters." it's not a big deal, though, i think we are all actually on the same page here.

barry responded to mine, to which i was responding to the guy saying he was a top 5 player.

that's just not who he is. he is an all time great at getting on base. that isn't going to change

yea and im not hating on him. If that is what he wants to do. You have middle of the order hitters slugging .560+ with above average peripherals that I would just rather.

Prime Votto was inflicting more damage when he wasn't taking walks. See his MVP year & the years sandwiching that. Imagine him having Bryce Harper's aggressiveness playing in the NL Centra parks.

Now he's a bad night or 2 from his SLG dropping below .500 Kind like his first half this year which wasnt anything remotely close to top 5 type hitting.

I'd say that is more due to a terrible first month or two than a problem with his approach. As for as Harper's aggressiveness, Harper has a higher walk rate than Votto this year and his swing rate is just a touch over Votto's.

that is what im saying. Harper still draws walks but is more aggressive at the plate.

2015: 44.6%
2016: 42.2 %

Votto

2015: 37%
2016: 40%

Similar overall, but when you consider the way both are able to walk, there is a difference there.

Altuve is in his 6th season

This will be his 2nd batting crown, leading his league in hitting.

Serious question, Votto lead his league 2 out of his first 6 seasons?

no, he's only led the league in OBP 5 times, though.

BA doesn't equal top 5 hitter unless you are over 50.

Before this year he was a singles hitter who didn't walk. Now this year he a slugger who can still make contact

PA with RISP in 2016

Harper: 127
Votto: 124

BB during those ABs

Harper:39
Votto:30

Votto has the 2nd highest SLG in baseball with RISP

I wasn't talking specifically about RISP. That small sample size is only about 25% of his plate appearances.

more talking about pitch selection. Harper hits a ton of non strikes really hard. Votto has this capability, but would rather walk then venture out of the zone.

Either the stat is valid and it means votto is agressive when it matters most or its not and you can't use it to tout Mookie. Can't have it both ways

i never said anything regarding RISP to tout Mookie or anyone else for that matter.

would you take Votto over Mookie this year or any year going forward?

Votto over an elite defending, power hitting, base stealing Mookie Betts who leads the free world in total bases by a large margin...all because of.....walks... lol
