Jim Nantz wants "Romo money" in next CBS contract

Jim Nantz, the face of CBS Sports, is looking for “Tony Romo money” in what is shaping into a potential showdown between the network and its longtime star, The Post has learned.
Sources said Nantz is seeking to top the $17.5 million yearly salary Romo received on a new contract signed right before the pandemic hit as everything perfectly aligned for the standout NFL analyst.
While Romo just works the football season, Nantz calls the NFL, the Final Four and golf, including the Masters.
Nantz has been out front for CBS for three decades. He currently makes $6.5 million per year on a contract that ends early next summer, according to sources.

Nantz is protective of his relationship with Romo. Last Sunday, with Nantz working the rescheduled Masters, Romo, who earns nearly a million bucks per game, was given the week off.
Nantz, according to sources, pushed for Romo to be sidelined instead of working with Ian Eagle or another partner. Ultimately, CBS Sports executives made the final decision on Romo being absent Sunday, feeling it was easier to have the whole first team not work instead of reconfiguring its broadcast pairings. When Joe Buck calls the baseball playoffs, Fox has Troy Aikman team with other play-by-play partners.

Whatever Nantz ends up making, he is in line for a raise. The going rate for a lead network sports voice is in the $10 million range. Joe Buck makes $10.5 million at Fox, according to sources, and NBC’s Mike Tirico is near that number, as well.

Why would Romo get so much more than Nantz in the first place?

Nantz deserves to be the highest paid guy in sports broadcasting.

ESPN would have backed the truck up.

Imagine thinking you’re worth that much commentating a football game
“Ugh! I don’t want 8 million a year. I want 11!!!!”

Because he’s significantly more important to the job than Nantz is.

I know it's insane money for calling sporting events but if Buck & Tirico are $10MM+, Nantz should be trying to get on that same level.
BTW, does Tirico call anything regularly besides ND football when they're on NBC? I know he's on the SNF studio show but are there any other regular calls he's assigned to?

Wow...didn't realize Nantz was getting shite on like that by CBS. Joe Buck making 4 mill more than Nantz is crazy. CBS needs to show him the money. He is the absolute best in the business.

Sounds like a combination of Nantz being underpaid relative to his peers at other networks as well as CBS getting desperate to retain Romo when a deal with Manning didn't come together.
Romo is looking like a deal they're going to regret. The articles says they viewed it as an exception rather than a benchmark but Nantz is using it as the benchmark in his negotiations.

I mean I can’t blame Nantz one bit

He is one of their lead anchors for the Olympics as well as doing hosting duty for events like the Kentucky Derby. He probably isn't pulling his weight right now relative to his contract, but he's essentially being paid to sit on the bench and wait for Al Michaels to croak. It's starting to feel like a Jay Leno/Conan situation where the old guard is refusing to leave.

Timing.
MNF is desperate for a guy like Romo, so they started throwing around market setting numbers which Romo leveraged with cbs.
It’s kind of like why Kirk Cousins signs a better contract as a FA than better QBs sign as extensions for their current teams.

Honestly he deserves top dollar.
He is CBS main guy, like NBC had Costas. He can do any sport, any type of event, and handle it like a pro.
Very few in SPorts field who can do all sports, events, etc and not miss a beat, he's one of the few.
Pay the Man
