Today, with his name, experience, track record and his rings, yeah I think he could. But not the Nick Saban from 1995 that was at the same career station as Harbaugh was when he took the Stanford job.
As for the other debate, the point was that as far as resources go, LSU is right there with any other top flight school, those resources had simply been mismanaged to a large extent up to that point.

I think saban, even before all his success could have built something there. That's something we will never know.
And sure lsu was up there. But my point is he came in and actually did something with the talent and actually got most of the Louisiana players to stay in state.

In college absolutely not. He did not stay long enough. In the NFL yes Harbaugh is better. Championships are the measure and nothing else. You play to win championships.

Let it be known that Saban got to Michigan State at a time when it was being riddled with NCAA sanctions. That probably had a little to do with his 34-24-1 record while with the Spartans. Even though his record was less than stellar, he turned a program that hadn't been competitive since the 60s into a team not to be trifled with. They would lay the smack down on you if you weren't ready for them. They destroyed a Top 5 Penn State team (in November) by the score of 49-14 one season and upset the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes in November of the next year.

Bill Walsh, Dennis Green, and Ty Willingham all had success at Stanford before Harbaugh. Lets not act like Stanford is Duke when it comes to football. Now, what Spurrier did at Duke - IMPRESSIVE.
Also, the 49ers have been talented for many years now. Harbaugh was smart in taking a good NFL job. The 49ers were hella more stable than the Dolphins that Saban took over.

Dennis Green did NOT have success at Stanford and Willingham's was modest. Walsh didn't win big, either, unless you consider his Sun Bowl win over LSU a major accomplishment.
Saban's first year at Miami, they finished as one of the hottest teams in the NFL, but his psychological games didn't work the second.
Saban didn't leave MSU a whole lot better than when he got there. Bobby Williams quickly presided over that dumpster fire. Dinar do left Saban a ton of talent, so he walked into a good situation at LSU.

Willingham won the Pac-10 and took Stanford to the Rose Bowl. That's modest?
Dennis Green took Stanford to an 8-3 record in '91, second in the Pac-10; his last season there. That's not successful?

People forget Saban's first 2 years at LSU were not stellar.

Of course He's a better overall Coach, Saban flopped in the NFL. Saban may be the better college coach though

Saban won the SEC in year 2 at LSU

Mike Nolan and Scot McLoughan drafted or signed
The previous coach had most if not all those players and led his team to a terrible record.
Harbaugh is def. a better coach than Saban.

Patrick Willis, Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Dashon Goldson, Ahmad Brooks, Navarro Bowman, Tarrell Brown, Ray McDonald, Justin Smith, Michael Crabtree, Alex Boone, Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati, and Joe Staley. The only draft picks in the Harbaugh/Baalke regime that are major contributors for the 49ers right now are Aldon Smith and Colin Kaepernick. All the other 49ers starters were picked up as free agents. How did Jim Harbaugh NOT inherit a very talented team?

I enjoy the "ton" of talent argument and then they name the same 5 players but forget everyone else on the roster

You do know that the coach Saban replaced won a couple of Big 10 titles and even won a Rose Bowl?

How much of that was legit? Perles ran that program into the ground by getting it put on major probation. Due to forfeits, MSU finished 0-11 the year before Saban got there. Perles may have won a Rose Bowl in 1987 but he proceeded to run the program into the ground after that.

Their record was something like 5-6 but they had to vacate all their wins because of an academic cheating scandal. Also, those Michigan State teams were good because they had a steroids program going on par with the mid '90s Nebraska teams. See Tony Mandarich. And don't forget, Saban was the defensive coordinator the year Michigan State won the Rose Bowl. A very valid case could be made that Saban was really the brains behind that operation not George Perles.

The only team to win the SEC with three losses, btw.
