Bill Russell would essentially be Clint Capela in this era

He's extremely overrated. Hakeem The Dream is 100 times the player Bill Russell was. However, he played in the MJ era and not in an era against 8 team leagues made up of Janitors and Locksmiths, so Hakeem did not win 11 rings.

Ring Counting is the dumbest shite in sports. We retiring Robert Horry's number next?

Maybe. But you can't really judge guys from one era with others when the game was much different. If you did that you'd say Joe Montana is Baker Mayfield.

In his era Russell was a tremendous player. Particularly on defense. But I do think he does get overrated because of the number of championships won. He didn't win those alone. Boston had a great TEAM...not just one great player. From an individual standpoint I'd say Wilt Chamberlain was a better player. He just didn't play for the Celtics.

Really stupid for it to be Bill Russell.

I don't think they should retire numbers either, but Bill's resume is hard to beat.

First African American coach in the NBA.
One of two player-coaches to be elected into the hall of fame as both a player and a coach (Lenny Wilkins)
One of only two player-coaches to win an NBA title (he won 2; Buddy Jeannette won 1)
11 NBA titles

To be honest, except for the Boston years, Russell wasn't very successful as a coach.

It’s widely known that Kyle Korver was actually the greatest/most influential Civil Rights activist in NBA history and Bill Russell noted this on several occasions.
