Boston just secured the best young duo in the league for the next 5 seasons.

How the frick are the Celtics supposed to sign the mid tier borderline all star types needed to win a title when a contract like that means they will only be able to afford vet min role players?

The cap goes up each year. People act like the thing is stagnant.

Crazy stat. Assuming the cap will go up in 10% increments, which seems to be what most experts think will or at least has a good chance of happening.

That $69 mil salary in 2029 will be the same as a % of the cap as a player making $19.9mil in 2015.

Good for him, but damn that seems dumb on Boston's part. Especially with Tatum due some money.

The question is: What is Boston supposed to do?

This is the reality a few teams face, where their best players are supermax eligible. Think of the 'untradeable' contracts of the last decade-- about as many of them ended up being traded, as not-- because what looks like an appalling deal today, only looks like a pretty bad deal by the last year.

Its a situation the CBA has helped foster. This is the new normal.

Absolutely bogus and not worth it. For Jaylen Brown???? The NBA needs a hard cap. Good, now the Celtics will be strapped and tied up with basically two players for a long time. Two players who have yet to accomplish anything that demands $304 million. I feel like we have truly entered an era that is going to see players get a massive amount of money and the quality of play goes down because of it. Anybody want to bet this will be Brown's least productive year in the NBA? I wont be surprised when it happens. Sums of money this large have been known to lessen a mans drive.

Good point. So what kind of player made that kind of money in 2015?

In 2015, Chris Paul was paid $20m.

By that time he was:

8x All Star
1x All Star Game MVP
4x All NBA 1st Team
2x All NBA 2nd Team
1x All NBA 3rd Team
5x NBA All Defensive 1st Team
2x NBA All Defensive 2nd Team
NBA Rookie of the Year
All NBA Rookie 1st Team
Led the NBA in assists 4 times
Led the NBA in steals 6 times
Career PER of 25.6

Compared to Jaylen Brown:

2x NBA All Star
1x All NBA 2nd Team
All NBA Rookie 2nd Team
Career PER: 16.4

In 2015, Chris Paul was paid $20m.

I imagine you will find other examples of guys like Brown who were also on that salary tier. Cherry picking Paul doesn't mean much. I mean, Jokic just got a supermax, too.

Oh look, I'm right

quote:

2. Joe Johnson $23,180,790

quote:

3. Carmelo Anthony $22,458,401

quote:

10. Deron Williams $19,754,465 $24,558,998

quote:

11. Rudy Gay $19,317,326 $24,015,541

Like someone else said, with the way NBA is structured with max salaries, what else can a team do? Guys like Tatum, Jokic, etc. will always be underpaid, and the next tier will get the benefits of the delta of value and salaries for the elite.

Money goes a lot further when you only have a handful of guys to spend it on vs a 53 man roster

Insane money for a guy that can’t go left and has never led the league in scoring.

MBA money is fricking stupid. Crazy that the beta player in the NFL, Pat Mahomes, makes less than Jaylen fricking Brown. He’s not even a top 15 player.

Jackson is coming for you, baw.

But in all seriousness, the NBA always pays more than the NFL. So does the MLB.

Jordan was only making $3.5 mil a year even after winning multiple titles and MVPs. Adjusted for inflation, that's less than $7.5 mil in 2023. Gotta give the NBAPA props at least.

Well, his 2nd team all nba selection this year suggests he is, thus why he is eligble for the super max.

I contend that he is no where close to that distinction, which makes the contact insane.

The bar that has to be reached to get a supermax contract needs to be looked at. A 7 year NBA veteran who has made exactly 2 all star teams and one 2nd team all nba shouldnt meet the supermax threshold

and to think… at least half the time he’s on the court every season he will be paid to just lolly gag around, going through the motions, and not giving anywhere near 100%.

That’s today’s NBA for you.
