Honestly, alot of other teams past on Brees too, it wasn't just a Saban thing. That shoulder was pretty bad. We saw the result of it his last few years with the Saints when he couldn't throw past 20 yards downfield anymore.....but prior to that he made the doctors look bad.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that Saban actually hid some physical tests from the Saints that allowed them to pull the trigger on Brees. So he helped him.

but apart from the Saints not a single other team in the league gave signing him any meaningful consideration.

Not true… I remember at the time people thought we would go with Vince Young… Brees was a semi-hot commodity Saints weren’t the only team on his trail…

Maybe the biggest butterfly effect in all of sports Look how that decision affected Miami, New Orleans, Alabama, LSU etc…. Hell, even Urban may have been at Florida longer had Saban not been at Bama That one decision by the Dolphins changed everything in the NFL and CFB

Not to mention what a potential dolphins/ Brees vs Pats/Brady rivalry looks like.

That’s contrary to what Saban has said in multiple interviews. Do you believe Garrett or Saban?

Remarkable how bad Nick Saban was in the NFL.

He was 9-7 and 6-10 on a team that had just fired a HC and without a QB. I don’t think it’s crazy to think that he would’ve adapted and figured it out with even decent qb play.

Jason Garrett is a toolbag

Maybe so. But this idiocy that I’ve heard people parrot that it was the Miami medical team’s decision, not Saban to pass on Brees, has always been so absurd. The thought that anyone was telling Nick Saban what he could do was garbage.

Saban would have ended up back in college game at some point. Saban was built for the college game, not the NFL

Maybe but even delaying his return to CFB by just one or 2 years would have been huge. Would he have still ended up at Bama? Would he have had the same extreme level of success somewhere else?

I 100% believe it’s the one who has no reason to lie and not the one who doesn’t want to be the one who passed on the Hall of Fame QB. And, again, the thought that Nick Saban didn’t have total control over all football decisions is simply asinine.

True. Less discussed in this situation is that Culpepper never returned to form after his injury.

Culpepper was a young star paired with Moss but the Saban Dolphins era for him was pretty poor (I think?).

Im pretty sure the medical team told him the prognosis for that injury and he acted on the advice

At the time Culpepper was considered really good

In the interview, you hear them bring up Culpepper's injury risk as well, but Garrett never really answers why they signed him over Brees when both had risk.

It's clear Saban wanted to low-ball Brees and he probably got the number he liked with Dante.

But that's never what he's said for 20 yrs...

Brees and Payton were a key factor together.

1000% Just look at that 06’ season, Brees arm was still not fully recovered at the beginning, but Sean knew how to coach to his player’s limitations.

Hasn't Saban said that? Basically said that was his biggest regret or something like that

For a guy who wound up the greatest college coach ever, a sub .500 record and passing on an elite HoF QB to build around is a failure.

He had one season of sub .500 record. Pretty damn myopic and immediate gratification seeking to call a single season as a failure. I’d think that the guy who would go on to become said greatest CFB coach ever would’ve likely adjusted.

Brees and Payton were a perfect match. There is no guarantee he’s even HoF caliber without that overly aggressive pedal to the metal 06-mid teens offense we ran.

There are no guarantees with anyone. League is loaded with busts—guaranteed, can’t miss talents that never do shite. Saban shot his shot, and airballed it.

Where do y'all get this shite? Compare the Dolphins the year before and the year after Nick was there.
