I don't care about tennis, never watched one second of that tournament but heard about all of the controversy so read a recap. In sports bad crap happens, bad calls happen.
Serena should have just shut up and played. My take, she was getting beat and she knew it, so she turned the match into a circus. Disgraceful.

Literally no one else in tennis is held to this standard from a suspension standpoint
What? And was the last player to call a tennis official an theif? And then proceed to smash their racket?
If this wasnt Serena the penalty would have and shouldve been far worse. She's a disgrace that should be suspended from all tournament play for 2 months...

Just watched what happened.
The umpire was totally justified, it was her third violation. It was indeed verbal abuse..ergo..game penalty. The coach even ADMITTED to coaching in the post match interview.
She tries to say 'men do this all the time'. Firstly, this is really a non sequitur, it does not matter what men do or do not do, but what Serena was doing at the time. Further, it is exceedingly rare that a man insults a ref like that. They ARGUE with the umpire, but I have almost never heard a man say something like 'you are a thief'. There is a significant difference between arguing about a call and insulting someone like Serena did. Furthermore, as the broadcaster mentioned, there is sometimes verbal abuse but it is often not the third violation.
This whole thing is an embarrassment for Serena. She was getting beat badly and then let her emotions get the best of her, its a really bad look. It was so pathetic how she started crying and arguing with the tournament bigwigs who came on the court, just disgusting really. She will try to turn this into some issue of sexism or racism, but sensible people will not fall for it. It is very unfortunate that liberalism has come to the point where people can simply, without evidence, make claims by appealing vaguely to 'sexism' or the like. Its become like a dogma, and so many people just accept it. Very strange. In any case, her conduct was disgraceful, she was getting beat like a dog and then could not handle it. Now she has to make it about her, instead of letting Osaka just enjoy her victory. If anything, Serena should probably apologize to both Osaka and the umpire for her disreputable conduct.

It’s obvious that a ton of people haven’t seen Tennis in this thread lol. Her “cheating” was the equivalent of a batter standing out of the box too long and getting called out. Not a normal penalty assessed and obviously she was given far shorter rope than most male players.

Wasn't she booted form the U.S. Open years ago?
She got disqualified for threatening to kill a lines women. And it just happened to be on match point. She was losing

Who cares? Even if the official was wrong in his call it was Serena that kept escalating the situation. She was the one who was out of control and screaming
Just watched it on TV, it was worse, and more embarrassing than I thought.
I feel bad for the other tennis player. Should have been a crowning achievement for her, instead Serena ruined it by her poor behavior.

When does this happen? I've never once been berated for being white or being a man.
I'm even keeled when it comes to this stuff, but I've definitely been berated for being a white guy before.

So he was calling ticky tacky penalties on her opponent too?

This is correct. But then she proceeded to break her bat over her knee and call the umpire a cheater. I don’t think you’ve ever watched baseball.

quote:No, just Serena was randomly called out for the coaching thing that everyone does. It was a headscratcher, to say the least. That doesn't mean Serena was justified to lose her shite like she did, but she was almost certainly singled out(for whatever reason) and called out on something that, yes, is against the rules. But it's something everyone else gets away with at all turns.
So he was calling ticky tacky penalties on her opponent too?

Exactly. You could give Serena some benefit of the doubt except for the fact she’s already done this before at the US Open earlier in her career. She’s just a nasty, trashy person.
It’s funny how her defenders aren’t talking about what happened in 2009.

How old are you? I caught the beginning of the sjw era in college and it happened fairly regularly in Nola. Bunch of morons running around especially during the whole monuments thing. If I didn't sign something, I wasn't acknowledging my white and male privileges blah blah blah.
While not technically in this category, I gotta say the most uncomfortable I've ever been was when I was hired and took a sensitivity class, being the only white dude. Those videos of redneck racist people saying stupid shite in the workplaces are cringeworthy, and I was just unlucky to be the only white guy there getting all the glances. Ha.
