Talks about causes that ended the “dead ball era” great read. I can’t imagine how many homeruns Ruth would have in ball parks today.
Not only the ballpark sizes but all the rule and equipment changes that favor power hitters plus the analytics that allow for a guy to hit for .220 if he can still mash 30-40 HRs.
When Ruth played there was no set height for a pitchers mound, no DH, no body armor or batting helmets that let your crowd the frick out of the plate with far less fear, less flame throwing pitchers which means less force for the ball on contact, bats and balls were of lesser quality for various reasons, strike zones have become much smaller, and station to station offense is now effectively dead.

When Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs in 1927, he hit 14% of all home runs in his league that year. For a player to hit 14% of all home runs today, he would have to hit over 300 home runs in one season.
To be fair, there were only 16 MLB teams and they played a 154 game schedule back then.

Because OPS was viewed the same in the 80s through the mid 90s as it is now, right?

And to be fair, every player had a chance to match those numbers but could not.

Ok. So what???? Then tell me why Ruth was so much better than everyone else. They ALL played on the same field.

58 59 60 58.
not just once.
60 was done in 148 games.
so 162 should make it easier.
and mlb lowered the mound in response to koufax and gibson.
and made spitter illegal.

You know how many “next Babe Ruth’s” there have been in just the last 20 years? About a half dozen. No he’s not the next Ruth.

Did you really just ask me that?
Yeah no one gave a frick about OPS back then but of course EVERYONE was about OPS+.
FFS people. Rickey is the greatest lead off man in the game’s history. Ichiro is the second greatest lead off man in history. They have a combined 5 SS in 41 seasons. Ichiro couldn’t even get one in the season he set the MLB record for hits in a season.
It’s not an award that rewards lead off men. How this is beyond y’alls’ mental is astonishing and saddening at the same time.

Honest question for you Colin, were you dropped on your head as a child?
OPS+ means jackshit now because you are trying to apply a stat that didn’t start carrying any real meaning to coaches and GMs until the 2010s when talking about awards that were given out in the 80s and 90s when Rickey was in his prime.
Do I need to write in Crayola for you to understand or do you want to feel like a faux intellectual again and require an overly complicated metaphor for you to grasp the point that is sailing right over your empty head?

Has to be.

WTF are you even talking about? I'm not attacking Ruth. I'm saying he put up with a lot of shite back then that is far more difficult that what players now have.
People now will say oh we have relief pitchers and they all throw fast! Ok great. So that means Ruth would be getting a frickton more fastballs to drill and he wouldn't have to worry about getting beaned by a death pitch on the inside nor did he have to adjust to some pitchers having super high mounds while others had their mounds so low there was an indentation instead of a mound.

I’m not disagreeing but I remember when A-Rod was going to end his career being the most decorated player ever.
