Is Trae Young underappreciated?

I’m a casual Hawks fan and obviously biased but it seems like he gets zero respect despite putting up some crazy numbers.
He’s averaging 27 PPG & 11.0 APG this season.
A lot of people say he’s a shot chucker but he’s shooting a respectable 38% from 3-PT compared to 32% last year.
I’ve heard multiple talking heads say he doesn’t like to pass but he has by far the most assists over the last 5 seasons, with 350 more than anyone else in the league.
He obviously is still bad at defense but is much better than he was a few years ago when he was probably worst in the NBA.
So yeah obviously the turnovers & defense hurt him but given his crazy raw production over the last few years, I feel like he’s a bit underrated. I’ve seen people and articles saying he’s not even a top 40 player.

Hell always be compared to Luka unfortunately. If he wasn’t traded for one of the best in the game he would be talked about a lot more Imo.
Eta also no one gives a shite about the hawks.

The hawks suck this year so he won't get much due, but the last 2/3ish years I would say he was criminally underappreciated. He put up outstanding offensive numbers but would never get mentioned by talking heads.

Damian Lillard has been part of some really shitty teams where he averaged 27/7/4 on 42% shooting and he was still considered a Top 10-15 player.
If I’m being completely honest, I think 80% of Trae slander comes from him being compared to Luka as well as his appearance. A lot of people hate him because he just looks like an a-hole

The frick? He led the Blazers to the playoffs 8 straight years. Then they blew shite up when he got hurt.

He gets the perception he does because the Hawks have underperformed since their trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.
I think at least part of it is the belief that Trae isn’t capable of playing winning basketball consistently, in part because he is so ball dominant and in part because he is such a defensive liability.

There is so some truth to both sides of the Trae young discussion. BUT the hawks issue is Tony Ressler more than anything.

He’s among the worst of the worst in foul baiting. His game isn’t fun to watch.
It’s not just the foul baiting. He dribbles the air out of the ball til there’s 5 seconds left on the clock and shoots or passes to someone who has to chuck it up.
This does get him a lot of assists, but it’s not winning basketball.
He never makes the right play early which would result in multiple passes and him not getting the assist.

Yes
Dude is having the best year of his career(on both sides of the ball) and he may not even make it in as an alternate.

If he starts winning more games he will be appreciated properly.
It's alot easier to put up stats on a shitty team

That's all well and good but when the team around him is shitty there isn't much else he can do.

No - someone has to accumulate the stats on every team and he’s that guy for hawks. Will never win a championship or get back to ECF as a #1 / as team currently constructed.

He’s a stat stuffer who’s game is not conducive to winning basketball
Sure he’s got assist numbers, but does he truly elevate the overall game of his teammates? Answer is no
He’s in the very crowded category of offensive guys who put up worthless stats because they ultimately don’t win or make their teammates better

Trae is playing really well this year. The team has been riddled with injuries and trade rumors. The funny thing about the Luka comparisons about one being a winner and the other being a stat stuffer is they basically have the same playoff records. Everyone says Luka has no help and they never say Trae doesn't have help (which he doesn't).

Him not being to elevate his teammates and be somewhat relevant goes to show why he isn't as good as you may think.

He makes like 40 million dollars per year I think he’s very much appreciated

Dame cut his teeth in the West making the playoffs for 8 seasons. Young has made the r playoffs three times and only made it out of the 1st round once.
It’s not even close

Trae has no help, I wouldn’t call him a stat stuffer, but Luka has the second highest PPG average of all time in the playoffs. He averages 6 more points and 6 more rebounds per playoff game. He’s a better defender as well.
