The Olympics is about the 5th or 6th most popular international soccer tournament. The World Cup is the worlds biggest sporting event.

Soccer stadiums are built bigger than basketball arenas, so what's your point? I'm sure if they had a 50,000 seat basketball arena, they'd sell that bitch out with no problem.

The most viewed sports game in our planet's history was China vs. the USA in men's basketball at the 2008 Olympics.
Wrong.

The 12-hour time difference between Beijing and New York limited the potential audience. The game was played at 10 p.m. Beijing time so it could be shown live in the morning hours across the U.S. According to AGB Nielsen Media Research, a television-tracking company, about 89 million people in China watched at least part of the game, the average audience was 37 million. That’s more than tuned in for any game played by Chinese star Yao Ming in the NBA this year, but it wasn’t even the biggest audience for an Olympic event that day: Chinese weightlifter Long Qingquan’s gold-medal victory beat out China’s 31-point loss. Meanwhile, in the U.S., the game averaged 11.5 million viewers, “pretty good for a Sunday morning basketball game,” NBC Sports spokesman Adam Freifeld told me.

Yes. It's a U-23 tournament.

I hate to tell you, but MLS, a second-rate soccer league, averages more in attendance than the NBA...right here in America. Only a few basketball arenas sell out.
You're gonna have to find a better argument. If you go by attendance, the NBA doesn't beat soccer in a country where soccer is perceived to be an unpopular sport.

It's the world's most popular sport. Even a guy like you can't argue that.
More people watch it, more people know who the stars are than any other sport.

600M > 37M (what the hell, I'll give you 89M)

Cristiano Ronaldo
I wouldnt know him if he was standing in front of me but then again soccer sucks.
I would go with Tiger as the worlds most recognized athlete.
A few years ago, Jordan was imo. You could find a "jump man" anywhere on the globe.

there are less games, more mexicans, etc.
kobe is EASILY the most recognizable player in the world's second most popular sport, in a sport, where there are all only five players on the floor at the same time, the cameras are close up (not 11 and panned far back).
also the lakers are the third most popular franchise in the whole world behind only the yankees and man u.
also, kobe is a champion 5 times.
And he's been famous for over a decade.
and he lives in the entertainment capital of the world, where that team is unquestioned king of all sports teams, in a city that's the second largest media market in the US.
i'm not the biggest kobe fan.
but the argument for him being the biggest superstar in the world makes sense

It's amazing how a game featuring an American team gets "the biggest TV audience EVAR", no questions asked.

this thread was about superstars. Not the sport. People got it mixed up then, and apparently are still doing so.

Basketball isn't the second most popular sport.

Also, wouldn't the argument be made that Ronaldo isn't even the biggest superstar in his own sport?
David Beckham is more popular than Ronaldo. HIs wife is a world famous pop star. He models for everyone world wide. And he's showered like he's a rock star everywhere he goes.

bullshite and you know it. Soccer is like the 8th most popular sport in our country. NASCAR and hockey are at least 3 times as popular as that crap you call a sport.

Exactly!
LeBron, Kobe, and Tiger are the faces of the biggest sports marketing machine in the world. I couldn't pick Ronaldo out from a lineup of mexicans. I guarantee you that more mexicans can pick out Kobe/Tiger/LeBron than they can Ronaldo. Soccertards love overrating the popularity of their sport just because a bunch of third worlders have no sports heritage and because eurogoofs don't have the athletic ability to do more than kick a ball around.
