Well, you said that a freaking golfer was more famous worldwide than any soccer player. In a way, that's comparing a game that (again) is mostly followed by white English speakers to a game that's #1 pretty much everywhere in the world (except for America).

I know of some kids in South Africa who could tell me United's entire starting XI and not know who Tiger Woods is. And you'll find kids (and adults) like these all over the world.

Nobody in this thread, but I keep hearing things like this in any soccer debate.

I doubt "millions of kids all over Africa" know who any professional athletes are.

Well, one of us has been to Africa before...you'd be very surprised. Just because they're in the third world doesn't mean they don't know who athletes are. Trust me.

False. China and Russia care more about basketball than soccer. Hell in Russia, everything takes a backseat to hockey. India doesn't give a shite about either because cricket is the NFL of that nation. Japan is more of a baseball nation.

I've been to India multiple times. Cricket is king, but they would go crazy if they ever fielded a team worth a damn in soccer.

In the US.

But, hold up a picture of Tiger next to a picture of Ronaldo in, say, Mexico...

You're assuming that just because soccer is beloved by third world countries and eurogoofs that every single person in those nations only cares about soccer and that they know every soccer player on the planet. Not true at all.

Hell there are football fans in our nation - you can even find some on this message board probably - that love college football, but hate the pro gram. Football is the most popular sport in our country, but I guarantee you that loads of people prefer basketball, baseball, hockey, or even NASCAR (someone is watching those fall races on Sunday) over the NFL/CFB.

Outside of David Beckham, if you held up a picture of any soccer player in the world right in street clothes, I guarantee you that 99% of our nation, Russia, China, and India would have no damn clue who they are. Hold up a picture of Kobe or LeBron, and at least 5-10% would immediately know them or at least what sport they play.

get out of the lowcountry sometime old man.

have you ever been to Croatia? I have, and soccer is king (bball may possibly be third, there is a game played in Europe called handball which is very big), always has been.

Lithuania may have both on par, but this is due to their not being strong in soccer.

So you are saying that just because they know some soccer scrub, they won't know Tiger? You do realize it's possible for Third Worlders to know athletes in sports other than soccer, right?

Didn't say they knew every soccer player. Didn't say they only followed soccer. (Rugby and cricket are next.) I said that they know who soccer stars are over an American basketball player.

I'm speaking from my experience on that continent. Basketball is not even on their radar.

Saying that Cristiano Ronaldo, the biggest icon in the world's biggest game is a "soccer scrub" shows how ignorant you are.

Not saying that they wouldn't know Tiger. Not saying they only follow soccer. Never said that, you're just pulling stuff out of thin air. Read first, you may learn something.

Listen, you have at least three guys in here that have been (combined) around the world. (Dandy probably has us beat, Ohiovol, buy a long shot.)

We all can tell you that you are wrong because we've seen it firsthand in several countries. If you want to keep arguing, well, you are fighting a losing battle.

Wrong. Lithuania is far and away a basketball nation. Soccer is starting to gain popularity there, but Basketball has been king there since we introduced it to them in the '30s.

As for Croatia, it's pretty much a threeway tie between basketball, handball, and soccer, but their top tier athletes play basketball and handball. Soccer is just really getting popular there in the last 20 years or so.

And just because you spent a week in a nation in college doesn't mean you know their entire culture.
