I know you're completely wrong, at least for that country.

Have you ever even been to India? Met an Indian person outside of Tech Support? I have. Cricket is bigger there than the NFL is here. Pretty much every sport outside of cricket is a niche sport, much like lacrosse and soccer are here.

I haven't been to India, but Ohiovol says he has. Ask him.

How is basketball a bigger "niche sport" than soccer? Name one Indian that has played in the NBA.

seen what? you ask people if they know who tiger woods is?

Seen that soccer is a bigger sport and that they know the game's stars more. They don't even watch golf or basketball in some of these places, how are they going to know who Tiger or Lebron are?

That is the crux of my argument.

if they watch soccer that closely to remember names of an entire team, they have heard of tiger woods. again, his scandal made headline news around the world.

Cricket is definitely number one. That doesn't mean they don't like soccer or know any pro soccer players. If they were better at soccer, the popularity of the game would skyrocket immediately.

Maybe. But if they don't know him from his golf but his soap opera a couple years back, that doesn't really make him a true "sports star". That makes him an American celebrity that got in trouble. Again, I don't think knowledge of Tiger is as widespread as Messi or CR7 anywhere.

But that's not the point.Who is the bigger name is the question at hand.

And just because you spent a week in a nation in college doesn't mean you know their entire culture.

You are quick to assume.

1. I have been there for work, three times, and specifically soccer related for two of them. I have met three major stars (on a European level), and consider one a friend. For those that know soccer viewing this thread, I will mention them, Jarni, Jerkan and Prosinecki.
3. Lithuania, should they ever field a competitive national side, will surprise you. It's not that it's gaining foothold or not, it's that they are not competitive. They would love to be competitive, and were they to qualify for a major world tournament, you'd see an immediate comparability in fervor and following.
4. "We". I am glad you personally were in Lithuania in the thirties to introduce basketball. You are quite a lucid poster for your age.

Didn't know you worked in soccer, Dandy. Thought it was just international business or something like that. That's awesome.

I remember I would sometimes play with Croatia in my 2002 FIFA World Cup computer game because he could score from the center circle.

The most viewed sports game in our planet's history was China vs. the USA in men's basketball at the 2008 Olympics. But I'm sure that means nothing because some mexican know a guy named Ronaldo.

Data from the mid-2000s suggests that basketball and soccer were roughly tied as China’s most popular sport with table tennis in third. Soccer is regarded as the No. 1 spectator sport in China. Large crowds attend live games and large audiences tune in for televised games for both local Chinese teams and famous foreign ones. By one count 3.5 million of China’s roughly 600 million soccer fans regularly attend soccer matches at local stadiums.

The World Cup is widely regarded by Chinese as the world's most important sporting event. In one survey, 68 percent of people asked in a Beijing poll said they watched matches in the 1998 World Cup even though a Chinese team was not present and the games were often on in middle of the night.
