Well the former greatest Laker of all time (Magic) has already said that Kobe is the greatest laker of all time.

And Jordan was better at the same age. He went to UNC though so it wasn't 17 years later

I'd rather take the opinion of someone who is passing the torch than the opinion of the MSB.

You would draft Shaq for the entirety of his career over Kobe? You're crazy. If you want to argue that Shaqs prime was better than Kobe's, I'd agree. But Kobe was definitely the more committed player who had the better overall career. Compare kobes 17th season with Shaqs latter yrs with Celtics/Cavs.
I don't care about who is the more committed player. Shaq was a physical freak that no one could compare to in that respect. He went in the 92 NBA draft and was awesome until after the Heat won in 06 and made a few all star teams even after that. He was better then Kobe the entire time they played together, so I don't see how I'm crazy?

I state clearly that the requirement is they played for the lakers for at least 5 years
Which is a fricking terrible way to determine who the best Laker is. That's like saying KG is a better Celtic than Pierce. My god what a shitty thread.

Yeah, you're right, when drafting a player for his career, commitment level is completely irrelevant

Awesome is a stretch. He was def very good though.
Btw, look up Shaq's stats in his 17th year and compare them to kobes. Kobe averages more than twice as many points, among other things.

Thats because he was in his prime and Kobe hadn't entered his yet. Using that logic, Dwayne Wade was better than Shaq the entire time they played together, does that make Wade > Shaq? Likewise for Garnett, Nash, etc.

The wear and tear of an NBA season is infinitely harder than playing college ball, especially considering the sheer volume of playoff games Kobe was in.

Yes, he would be in the top 5 all time for the Lakers.

Are you calling Magic a liar?
Posted on 4/29/13 at 10:41 am to Palm Beach Tiger
#1 is obviously Kareem. Do you guys not know what he did?
Kareem (20 years):
6 rings
2 finals MVP
6(frick!) season MVP
ROTY
19x all-star
10x all-NBA 1st team
5x all-NBA 2nd team
5x all-nba defensive 1st team
6x all-nba defensive 2nd team
led the league in scoring twice, rebounds once, blocks four times.
Oh, and he's the all-time scoring leader.
Magic (17 years):
5 rings
3 finals MVP
3 regular-season MVP
12x NBA All-Star
9x All-NBA First Team
1x All-NBA Second Team
4× NBA assists leader
2× NBA steals leader
Kobe (17 years):
5 rings
2x NBA Finals MVP
1x NBA Most Valuable Player
15x NBA All-Star
2x NBA scoring champion
10x All-NBA First Team
2x All-NBA Second Team
2x All-NBA Third Team
9x NBA All-Defensive First Team
3x NBA All-Defensive Second Team
Kareem has 6 MVP's. 6!!!!!!! Magic has 3. Kobe has one. Kareem is OBVIOUSLY #1 for the Lakers, probably #2 or #3 overall (Jordan, maybe Russell but I'd say Kareem). Kobe is top ten, but he's not on Kareem's level. Magic has Kobe on MVP's and NBA-leading statistics.

How do Kareems stats breakdown when you only look at what he did wearing a Laker uniform?
Posted on 4/29/13 at 10:59 am to onmymedicalgrind
Fewer of everything, still more of everything except defensive awards than Kobe.

No. The only thing he has more of as a Laker than Kobe is MVPs.
Posted on 4/29/13 at 11:27 am to 1ranter1
That's true. I thought he was in Milwaukee for three years, not six, my bad.
Anyways, Kareem was definitively a better player than Kobe, but their legacy as Lakers is close. If Kobe gets an MVP and another title he could approach it.
