Is Kawhi Leonard worth a max contract?

He is asking from one from the Spurs and the Spurs are not offering it at this time.
The obvious answer from a lot of people will be, yes, of course. He was an NBA Finals MVP, is 23 years old and is a good player. When guys like Eric Gordon can get max deals, so should he.
However, he averaged like 12/6/2 last year. He's a very good defender and a glue guy, but is a good defender that averages 12 points a game worth a max slot. Consider:
Is Leonard worth that kind of money? Is he the guy that will be "the franchise" and be able to carry a team deep in the playoffs after Duncan retires?

San Antonio could sign Leonard to a five-year, $90 million-plus extension now, if the Spurs were willing to make him their designated player. San Antonio could also negotiate a four-year deal at the maximum contract level – or below – before the Friday deadline. As a restricted free agent next summer, the Spurs could also sign Leonard to a five-year extension at or below the maximum contract level.
Is Leonard worth that kind of money? Is he the guy that will be "the franchise" and be able to carry a team deep in the playoffs after Duncan retires?

With more working parts, certainly.
But the Spurs won't give him a max, he will have to take a discount to stay with Pop.

He deserves to be paid more than Hayward & Parsons.

Pop won't be there when Timmy retires.

Good question.
You can look at it 2 ways.
1. Some teams are idiots for giving so and so a max deal
2. A max deal is the expected payout for the top 30 or so guys in the leage
Like, isnt he worth as much as Bosh? I would say he's a better defender and rebounder, and can score about as well. He isn't as tall but can guard a 4 pretty effectively with his size/length

Yes. His stats are a little skewed since he was the 4th option last year. His role will increase in the coming years
He'll stay til Parker retires

What would lead you to believe he can score as well as Bosh??

Guys who got max contracts in the last few seasons:
Paul George
Kyrie Irving
John Wall
Is Kawahi as good or better than them?

K. Leonard is definitely top 10. Given his youth I'd take him over anybody not named LeBron, Durant, or AD

You can certainly make that argument

When George was playing well and was healthy it was a legit question.
Now? Leonard is easily better and more valuable than those 3.

Nobody would even know who Leonard is if he was in Milwaukee. The Spurs make him look better than he is.

Exactly my point. And San Antonio isn't a free agent destination city. That's how they stay good, they find and develop young talent. Duncan was a no brainer #1 pick in draft and they tanked to get him. But Parker and Manu were steals, and so was Leonard. Pay the guy. Plus with the new TV deals it's nothing.

He was the Finals MVP. Good on him. If Ray allen doesn't hit that 3 two years ago Danny Green is your finals MVP. Should danny earn a max contract as well? You can't judge anyone on the Spurs appropriate monetary value compared to the rest of the league

This. People overrating the crap out of him for five games.
Someone else's point about Danny Green is valid too.

You people can't be serious?
The Spurs made K Leonard, not the other way around. Put him on any other team and he's just a role player.
shite, he was just a role player on the Spurs until the NBA Finals rolled around.
Spurs will not offer him a max contract and shouldn't. The Spurs can replace him with some nobody from europe and get the same production. shite, just look what they did with Boris Diaw and Danny Green.
Anyways, after saying all of that. I like Leonard. Definitely a good defender but doesn't have a great offensive game. Right now in his career he is a poor man's Paul George (before the whole breaking his leg and what not).
He's worth 12-15 mill. Definitely not 20+ though, especially as the #3 or #4 option on the Spurs team.

The Spurs have definitely developed him. But he's become a very good player. His most valuable asset is his ability to play defense on the games best players like Lebron/Durant.
