Tyson Gay might be the most overhyped Summer Olympics bust since the '04 Basketball team
I mean, he came to China to run and he pulled out of the 100 and never got to run the relay after dropping the baton.... definitely Gay
Well, he's still a little injured, probably, and it was kind of a "duo" effort on the baton drop.

They are professional track athletes! I garantee they have made a few thousand baton exchanges in their lives. You are saying that a HS and College athlete should make less mistakes??
Absolutely that's what I'm saying. I know at my HS they would make far fewer mistakes because the 4 guy's scheduled to run the race would practice the handoff almost ever day as would alternates. In the Olympics we drop the baton and get embarrassed and questioned by NBC. Drop the baton at my HS and feel the wrath of coach Green

We also would get much smoother handoff's than any of these Olympic teams, our coach would get mad if someone slowed down too much.
Its not about the cumulative # of times you have taken handoff's, its about being in synch with the guy's you are running the relay with.

There is no team unity with the US T&F runners. It is showing loud and clear right now.

I was just messing around...

Yep, excellent point. You could see it when they dropped the baton, too. They didn't console or talk to each other, or anything, they all just went their separate ways, pissed off. Shame, really.

It is the me, me, me mentality that is present in today's US athletes. This will hopefully wake up the US T&F Federation and they will make changes in preparation for London.

No shite. Even the successful handoffs look horrible. The Jamaican lead man nearly ran up the arse of his own second leg man.

what a disappointment. the LSU mens track team probably would've qualified.

so i guess tomorrow we're going to revisit the bolt vs phelps thread again. but this time bolt with the gold in 100m,200m,4x100

I'm really disappointed in Tyson Gay. It just wasn't his time with the injury, etc. Hope he can bounce back... gotta admire his attitude.
I have to say, though... U.S. T&F disappointed me period.

I just find it ironic this guy who was hyped as one of the world's fastest runners comes to the event of his life with all of this media hype and doesn't even really get to run

I don't think he was hyped nearly as much as the WR holder, Bolt. He just never came back from the injury he sustained at the trials.
The reason he gets blamed for the botched handoff is because he skipped the practices in which the handoffs were worked on.

It IS easy to handoff a baton.
It's only difficult if you don't care about it.
I ran track in high school for four years and rand dozens of track meets a year. I never saw anyone on my team drop a baton.
That was a pathetic display of relay running.

...for Olympics level athletes?...Hell, no! ...these people lost concentration on the MOST BASIC FUNDAMENTAL in relay running - coached from friggin' High School ...these folks were thinking they had it ( gold) in the bag - automatic - and didn't prepare properly. Simple as that. Hey - no else dropped on any other team ....we did on BOTH teams...what does that kinda indicate...
