BTW I like Bill Simmons a little. When you first find his stuff, you really like him because its fresh and funny but the more you hear him make the same 80s-90s references and points without changing them, it kind of wears on you

yeah i just ignore him for a month or 2 at a time and increase my reading when the NBA nears

People like Bill Simmons because they'd have a beer with him at the bar and talk about tha Sox. Personally I think he's not that great.. like people have said. He's just a good guy to talk to.

Most of my friends enjoy him, but I just never have.
I'll read something of his every now and again, but I just never got into him, really.

People will like writers based on their own interest. I like Simmons because I like the random pop culture references and I understand his jokes.
It's the same reason I can't respect any black columnists. They are all race baiters. But some black folk may appreciate them because they are "sticking up" for their race, when most of the time there is no issue there.
Some others I like : Peter Gammons, Clay Travis, Wright Thompson.

There are plenty of great writers that are not national, but people hate them because they either write about a team they hate, or they think they hate a team they love. People associate writers, especially beat writers or lead columnists, with the teams they cover.
I could name several and people would immediately go, "Bama homer" "Gator hater" etc. There are many truly talented writers out there.
The internet "blurb" culture and short attention spans ruin a lot of content, also, because it gets dumbed down.

I'm a pretty big BS fan. He writes a bunch of shite that I ignore (anything about Boston) and I avoid a lot of his podcasts with special guests, but when the topic interests me, count me in. Love his mailbags and chats, too, but he doesn't do them that often anymore (I don't think he's done a chat in like a year).

That's patently false, but whatever man.

who are some that do not inject race into their columns that I should read up on?
I haven't came across any that can fully get away from the race card.
most of the time, just to gain notoriety. Ex: every columnist hack that ESPN hires that happens to be black. Is it coincidence? Or do they know it promotes viewership and debate?
Which doesn't help at all, because that makes them use racial issues more, because that's the chance to make it big...to get their name out. To get their face on TV instead of behind the paper.

I contend that black columnists write about race much less often than you allege, and that your obsession with race is the problem.
And by the way, merely mentioning that aspect of a situation is not "race baiting".

having a different opinion on race in sports is not necessarily race baiting any more than having a different opinion about race and sports is racist
if you think every single black columnist is a race baiter then it is probably a "you" issue
FWIW - don't try and make me defend the Stephen A Smiths of the world because I won't

Oh I wish he wrote more. It goes in spurts with him. He'll have a story a week some months, then disappear for 2-3 months.
Not only this, but I feel like his writing has become more Boston-centric than it used to be (i.e. the last 4-5 years). Before anyone jumps on me, I know he's from Boston and that's how his career started. Now that he's only writing once or twice a month, seems like everything is about Boston more.
He's a national figure/writer now but his writing remains too regional for me to be interested. At one point a few years ago, he was covering a wide-range of topics and teams and doing it very well. Now, not so much.

Yeah, I can't really get on-board with his Boston obsession either
Was he one of the guys who made the 30 for 30 about the Cubs collapse all about the Red Sox? Or did he avoid being quoted in that?

The text you quoted was about Wright Thompson, not Simmons.

I think some of the more high profile ones are pretty bad about it, like jemele hill whom you usually rush to defend. So not all or even the majority, but many of the higher profiles ones are. It's just easier to get noticed that way, sort of like Bayless being a professional troll.

I don't have any problems with race. I do have a problem with using race as a platform when it is not warranted.
If you want to be an activist, then go be an activist. If you want to write about sports, then write about sports.
Racism in sports today is pretty non existent. At least in the big 3 sports. White columnist rarely if ever write about it. And EVERY columnist is looking for the next big story. It's not like they just ignore it. If it were there, it would be written about.
