Guys had a pretty weird career but seems to be a solid qb people forget about

I feel like he’s a guy you can at worst trust not to frick things up. Whether that makes him over or under rated idk.

Every year since his rookie season he's gotten slightly better it seems.

How can you be underrated as the #1 draft pick overall?

As the number one overall pick his career hasn’t been great
He’s had a nice/very good career, but he was never a game changer, which you should be when you’re #1 overall pick (and QB)

ETA: for what he did with SF, the team that picked him #1 overall he did not have a very good career with them

There's been 47 QBs (including the 2020 draft) taken in the first round since the 2005 Draft, where Alex Smith was taken #1 overall. These are the QBs that I would say have been better and I'd probably rank Smith around 9th:

1. Aaron Rodgers
2. Patrick Mahomes
3. Andrew Luck
4. Matt Ryan
5. Matthew Stafford
6. Cam Newton
7. Deshaun Watson
8. Lamar Jackson
9. Alex Smith
10. Joe Flacco

I think the issue with Smith was that he was #1 overall and he hasn't really lived up to that, but he has been a solid NFL QB for years. Had he and Rodgers swapped draft positions, I think Smith would be better considered as living up the expectations of a 1st round QB.

This makes sense. It seems people have grown accustomed to high drafted qbs as either super stars or complete busts and so since smith turned into a journeyman of sorts a lot of people just stick him in the busy category even though that’s not true at all

Neither. Rated just right. Every time he’s brought up in discussions everyone seems to be on the same page regarding his talent level.

I just can’t believe he’s going to try to play again. Apparently his dream is to lose a leg on the football field. And for the redskins.

Average.

But a,so gets the unknown label because you must never know what his career would have been had he any sort of consistency in coaching and system as a young QB.

A guy I’m cheering for. After watching that E60 on him. He could be a Dallas Cowboy and I would cheer for him after all he has been through. Would love him to take one more snap just so he can say he made it back.

He always came across as Trent Dilfer-esque. Both #1 picks who needed good to great defenses to carry the team, can manage the game but will never be explosive on offense.

I mean no one ever said, "did you see Alex Smith last night when he threw for 500 yards and 6 Tds?"

In the Andy Dalton zone

Decent numbers, competent QB. But will never put fear in you as an opponent.
