What’s iowas celing?

Does anyone think year in year out they can compete with Michigan and Ohio state?

I don’t.

They’ve done it before. They were arguably the best team in the Big Ten in the 80s. Probably better than Ohio State in the early 90s, and better than Michigan for a lot of the 00s and 10s

He was there for 20 years only had two seasons where he lost 2 or less games and had only 2 top ten finishes.

In his rose bowl years (3) he lost to Ohio state in all but one of them and the one he didn’t he didn’t play them and they ended up ranked behind both Michigan and Ohio State.

Ferentz has been there 23 years has been to one rose and 2 orange bowls and has 5 top 10 finishes. 3 seasons with 2 or less losses

ETA: To be clear I’m not saying to knock Fry. I’m saying this because I think ferentz has been solid doing what he does.

True, but Ferentz has only managed a share of two Big Ten title (last coming in 2004). He’s also played for 2 more since the Big Ten switched to divisions and CCG format, and while they should have won in 2015 IMO, they got embarrassed in 2021.

Of the 5 top 10 finishes you mention, 3 of those came in consecutive years from 2002-2004. The last was in 2015, so he’s not producing as consistently as he used to.

Fry also won shares of 2 Big Ten titles, but he managed something that Ferentz still hasn’t and won the Big Ten outright in 1985.

In the same 10 year span that Fry won his conference titles from 81-90, Ohio State produced the same with 2 shared and 1 outright. Granted, Michigan had a lot more success than I remembered in the 80s, definitely a better overall decade than Iowa. I wasn’t born yet and didn’t realize that Schembechler was there the entire decade. But I have always seen the highlights of Iowa beating Michigan in #1 vs #2 Game of the Century on the their way to the 1985 title with Chuck Long at QB

All that to say, Ferentz = Fry, but at least Fry was innovative and brought life and excitement to the program

Imagine firing Ferentz and nose diving into the doldrums. It’s like Solich at Nebraska. They should be killing themselves to get NIL money to get him an elite RB and a good pro style QB. Then watch him win the Big Tem!
