LINK to ESPN article

quote:

The IOC said that it surveyed more than 3,500 athletes over the past year and that 70% said it was "not appropriate to demonstrate or express their views" on the field of play or at the opening or closing ceremony. The survey also showed that 67% of respondents disapproved of podium demonstrations.

quote:

Upholding Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter, which prohibits any "demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda" at the Games, puts the IOC at odds with Olympic officials in the United States. The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee said in December that it will not take action if athletes raise their fists or kneel during the national anthem at their event trials before Tokyo

So apparently a survey was taken. When will our media flip out over this?

So you’re saying there’s common sense outside the US?

There is almost a 0% chance that this gets applied evenly.

Can’t wait to boycott the Olympics also. If there’s one sport people definitely can live without, it’s one that happens once every 4 years.

I'd love to see that breakdown by country.

The Olympics are political. The IOC ban denies reality — and athletes their voice.

quote:

The IOC’s guidelines were not only a response to a global zeitgeist of athletes’ political expression, but also a firm rebuke to last summer’s outburst of activism.

quote:

The bottom line is that the IOC is not against politics; it is against a certain type of politics. Banning political protest is itself a blatant political act.

So it seems NBC has fired its first shot...

The article starts with a picture of Hitler

By Jules Boykoff, author of "Power Games: A Political History of the Olympics"

So the guy that stands to make money off of the politicization of the Olympics is in favor of the politicization of the Olympics. Shocker.

One side won't even try.

The other side has been doing this for nearly 60 years and will continue to do so.

They were expelled from the village by the USOC and the IOC would have moved in next if the USOC had not done anything. So, not sure I am following you on this.

It has only happened once, that was Tommie Smith and John Carlos. So it will be really interesting to see what happens if someone protests. Will NBC make a huge statement? Will the IOC back up there words? I think the IOC will. The IOC does not want the shenanigans of politics, even though sports at its purest form is nothing but political.

What we may see is someone refusing to come get their medal as a form of protest. As protesting politically is basically offending the host of the games, in some ways.

But Juan Antonio Samaranch basically offended the US in his closing ceremonies comments in Atlanta.

If trump had won the team 100% would have stayed in the locker room. Still probably a decent chance of it

These fricks still owe us for the debacle on the hardwood in 1972.
